I saw this caption in the left hand frame under news on Techno Research's web site. Could this be the holy grail we've been looking for?

Isn't that the one DaveS (already a sponsor) sells? He spent a lot of time with the vendor getting everything worked out, and aside from normal "windows serial port misery" the tools look to work quite well.

As posted in another thread, the first person that sends me a PM with a promise to hook it up to a Buell will get a free Palm Pilot (Palm IIIxe) shipped to their doorstep. You may have to scare up a cable, but the PDA is yours.

geesh! Can't give 'em away

That looks like it would be cool to play with! Would it work with an Techlusion TFI unit? Stock or race ECM? If you had the palm set-up, could you adjust it on the fly?

Seems like they are talking about Direct Link and being able to change fuel maps and spark maps in the ECM. Now that would be a real break through for people building street engines or budget track engines on xb's.

Yes, I think this is something different from the VDSTS and more like the direct link. I have the VDSTS and it has some helpful features, mainly being able to reset the TPS and AFV sensor.

To clarify some of this.

Technoresearch makes both VDSTS and Direct Link. They are related programs. Direct Link has many of the features of VDSTS built into it. But VDSTS is a more thorough diagnostic tool.

VDSTS will let you reset your TPS and AFV, run a bunch of tests on systems, diagnose trouble codes, etc. It sells for $195.

Direct Link, which is just now coming out of the chute and still has a few growing pains, currently won't let you reset the AFV and TPS, but will before long as they incorporate fixes and features that I've been feeding them into the SW. It is a two part tool: the SW/Cable that sells for $99, and the ECM Specific USB Key that sells for $249, for a total cost of $348. It won't run without a USB key inserted into the USB port on the computer. Once a key has been inserted and the ECM contents downloaded, that key will become locked to that particular ECM and will not be usable with any other ECM. The program is exrremely powerful, but requires some understanding of how the Buell/VDO ECM works to tune well with it. It does NOT modify the ECM algorithms, it only modifies values in the fuel and spark look-up tables.

Both programs will let you not only hook the computer to the diagnostic port on the bike, but also will let you hook a Bosch wideband O2 system with RS232 outputs to the computer. This will give you time correlated TPS, RPM, and A/F data in virtual strip chart mode. Direct Link will let you act on that data, VDSTS will merely let you see it. If you are using a power commander or Techlusion tool for tuning, then VDSTS would be sufficient.

So, the bottom line is that if you just want to do diagnosis stuff, and reset TPS's and AFV's and such, across multiple bikes, VDSTS is the SW for you. IF, OTOH, you want to dial in your ECM after modifying things on your bike (intakes, exhaust, porting, big bore, etc), then Direct Link is the one for you.

VDSTS is available here

Direct Link is not on the web site yet. I'm hesitant to put it there at this time, given the current state of the SW. I would much rather have a chat with anyone purchasing it at this time. There is much power in the SW, but also much responsibility. You can blow up your bike in a hearbeat with it if used improperly. Tuning with it is not intuitive, it took Terry Parsley and me days to get it figured out. I will be writing a guide on how to tune a Buell with it in the coming weeks, and will furnish that guide to anyone that buys the SW from me. In the meantime, I will need to convey some of that info verbally to anyone chomping at the bit to get started on tweaking their ECMs.

All,
Cool. It was 3 degrees this morning here and we have ~3" of snow from a system that moved through Thursday evening.

So, I can wait til you all get things worked out. Too many toys, too little money
Cheers

Sorry to appear a little thick, but aren't Technoresearch agents for Rapid-bike as well? Is the Direct link a different thing again?
