I don't believe you will find a better header.

The "muffler" has already been the subject of MUCH debate. Please do a search or two... try the terms

Drummer
Odie
Force
Jardine
D&D

It really all just depends on where you want your power. It's next to impossible to say "This one" or "That one" is better or best because it depends on what YOU want.

That said... The Drummer seems to make noticeable gains everywhere w/o sacrificing power anywhere. I've run a Force (~$800) and a Drummer (~$400) and I have the Drummer installed right now.

Yes, please do a search.

Maybe a thread should be started about bad mufflers.

John, that's what I'm running, and am very happy with it. It's also the quietest of the ones mentioned, which is why a lot of people would rather go with something else. Which is why I went back to it after trying others.

I love the sound of my Jardine and since I bought the 12r for looks and sound I think thats the best. That said the pipe I bought needed re packing after about 3 k miles. I used 20k degree K-o wool from a refractory company i work for very dense compaired to regular packing material and am going on 7k miles with no signes of wear.
The weight savings is great. Although I dont know what the drummer or other pipes weigh!

Go to www.kdfab.com for Drummer info. I'll be wearing one on my new 12SS.

I did a bunch of research, and ended up with the D&D. I lost a bit of torque on the low end, and top end is never the place to be with a V-Twin. That being said, the mid-range punch with the D&D made it all worthwhile. Plus, it sounds AWESOME, a real head turner at red lights.

Whatever happened to the exhaust shootout? Did it ever take place or is it still in the works?

here's my OFWIW. after following a long earlier thread, and researching the buell race kit, d&d, drummer, special ops and jardine,,,,,,,,,and......after looking at dubious charts of torque and hp, i came to the decision to go with the buell race kit (ecm, k&n, can and tps). if you buy into the buell engineering cult in the first place, why would you question their own engineering of what they feel is the best engineered exhaust and performance 'race kit.' lots of other attempts at making loud noise,, ..but where is the comprehensive approach towards improved performance, furthermore, what it really comes down to is ...how does she sound? admit it, this is 98 percent of the satisfaction factor, so unless you are drag racing every day and measuring torque curves, get with the program.

Thanks for the insult...

The race kit is called a race kit for a reason. Because it gives you more power in the upper range where you'll be on a race track (so I assume you DO drag race every day : ) seems how you chose the race kit...)

Where does Buell engineer for when you DON'T have the race kit (you know, for that occasional time you're running on the street instead of at the track)? They tune for a broad power band. The problem they run into is the EPA. Aftermarket systems don't have that problem, so a few of the aftermarket solution providers have decided that tuning for the same goal that Buell did with their street pipe would be a good idea. A few of them have done so to great effect. To great enough effect that once tuned, they make more on the top AND bottom...

I agree though... On the street, it's all about sound. I could care less about a HP or two on the street. Have you heard a Drummer, Force or D&D BTW?

as we all know, none of us would run on the street with the buell race kit, since buell has clearly stamped and embossed on each and every race can that it doe not meet EPA standards for noise. but sincerely, M1, my post was not an insult, merely, a joust to hear from the other contenders. so .....carry on....you must admit, it honestly is for the sound effect, at least, most of the time.

I agree : ). That's why I pop my Force "muffler" on every once in a while, load my Force map in my PCIII and run around town setting off alarms and giving myself a head ache : ).

The thing is though... I also have a Drummer and it works EXCEEDINGLY well in the tight twisties. Loads of power at 2K RPM's, loads of power at 5K RPM's. My Force beats it by two from ~3200-~3900 but gets MURDERED below 3K by the Drummer (like by 10-15HP). The Force sure does sound nice though : ).

I've phased in the following mods, here's my seat-of-the-pants report from the last 4.5mos, this is only my opinion, take it how you want, no i don't have dyno sheets but i'm pretty sensitive to how the bike feels each day i'm on it...

Stock config - felt great but wanted more sound

Special O.P.S., K&N, no snorkel - felt better and sounded WAY better, crazy-mean growl and snorts (great bang for the buck)

Special O.P.S., K&N, no snorkel, drilled airbox - definitely lost something down low, didn't like the drilled box at all. intake sound was cool at first but started to annoy the hell outta me

Special O.P.S., K&N, no snorkel, stock airbox, TFI - what a headache trying to dial everything in, after a TPS reset and plug change I couldn't get the bike tuned. never could cure the stumbles and weird behavior no matter what i tried. i actually started ruining the dials on the TFI i was tuning so much.

Drummer, K&N, no snorkel, stock airbox, Race ECM, TFI - Holy crap! thing pulls like a train from 2K up. I was skeptical but man, you can FEEL the bike wanting to leap forward when you crack the throttle. my first run out the front wheel kept coming up. no change in riding style, definite change in power curve. Feels like a new machine and lays the torque/power on PHAT in the range i ride in, 3K - 5K. I never redline my bike, i'm always on back-roads just loving the throttle response and the sound, it sounds like a tuned package with the Drummer on. not loud, just smooth authority. love it! people comment on the sound a lot, definite muscle rather than just loud pipes.

If i can rid my bike of ping in certain conditions this thing is set up perfect! Hoping to get in some dyno runs for final tuning before the season ends. I'm a believer in the Drummer hype now and Kevin has been absolutely great to work with. (thanks again, Kev!)

Love My Drummer!

Type1, Hows the TFI working with the current Drummer setup? Did you try it w/o the TFI at all? I have basically the same setup w/o TFI. Wondering if it is worth the hassles I've read about here.

The Drummer works very well. You won't be disappointed! You should buy a muffler based on how you ride. I bought the Drummer because it provided an even power increase over the whole rpm range. I would never buy a muffler that lost power or put the power curve in a small range of the rpm. Thats the difference between standing it up in second gear and being pissed off because you can't do it!

Madsx, TFI is working much better, I don't have stumbles or surging anymore but I am trying to tune out the ping (cause has nothing to do with Drummer or TFI), otherwise it's a fantastic package! I've got a 12 though, not sure you would need it on the 9. The TFI only adds more fuel.

And I fully agree with Trac95ker, figure out where you want your power then decide. I studied TONS of dyno sheets while saving up money for a pipe. The Drummer is drop-dead gorgeous. I smile every time I look at that fatlet. Really compliments the bike with an understated style.

I'm a definite Drummer supporter, smooth steady power, nice sound. For those who ride fast and smooth & carving tight corners the Drummer is the way to go and IMO is a very good way to go. It is not a poser exhaust, it's a performance exhaust. It's a real world rider's exhaust, like a Buell is a real world rider's bike.

Typeone,
Re pinging - have you had the ignition timing checked, a lot of bikes aren't set up very accurately from the factory. If you're putting in more fuel with the TFI and still pinging then the timing is definitely suspect.

Madsx, you don't need to run a TFI unless there is a fueling problem that needs to be corrected. Check Jerseyguy's posts on TFI on an XB9 with race ecm.

Opto, yup, timing has been checked/set by a very good Buell tech. Still pings.

Before that reset I was retarding the timing in small increments all the way down to 8 degrees retarded. Still pinged but was harder to reproduce with the timing that retarded. Not good. I'm back to factory spec for static timing and playing with other angles. I don't wanna mess with that cam sensor anymore after I learned that you are actually removing fuel too.
