Hello everyone. I was reading the archives and back in 2002 there was a bunch of posts about broken sidestands. Well my 2004 LIghtning just fell over onto my pressure washer (no damage to either) so I put it up on my lift and pulled the sidestand off. It turns out the bolt that goes through everything broke where it is threaded. Does anyone know if that sidestand stuff from 3 years ago is still going on. Anyone else have a new one with a broken sidestand. I'd like to have as much information when I go to the dealer tomorrow.

Azullo I have an 04 12R . I put mine on a lift and checked out the bolt before it broke. It had a hairline fracture where the thread ended. I would sugjest that buying an extra bolt would be wise.

I have an '04 12S and mine broke a few weeks ago also. Rather than have it happen again, which inevitably it will, I made my own bolt out of two Grade 8 bolts. No problems now but I'm keeping an eye on it.

here is the official diagnosis (in my opinion):

Running the bike while it is on the side stand causes the bolt to slowly back out of the hole, causing the bolt to shear off at the shoulder. Mine fell over while I was warming it up and my stand was also bent when this happened. When I retrieved the broken piece from the hole I could see absolutely no evidence of any thread locking material.

My solution:

I ordered 2 bolts, one to install and the other I carry on the bike at all times. I installed the new bolt using a generous portion of RED threadlocker. This was after I spent about 45 minutes pounding the actual stand back into shape. It's been over a year now, and I check the bolt regularly. No sign of it backing out, its right where I put it.

Something else you might want to consider: Repeat the threadlock procedure for your shift linkage. Get some spare shifter linkage bolts and carry those also.
