Well, I was getting ready for my first big group ride this morning...ready to show off my new sled. Warmed it up, backed it out, and then noticed the CEL was on. Put it back in the garage and cycled the ignition a couple times...still there. Also, I may just be oversensitive, but I think I detected a very faint smell of gas. But was running perfect up until this, and the only new element introduced since was a 5 minute rider over some wet pavement the day before.

Any similar problems? Any ideas?
Thanks
TK
ps. I hope this isn't the type of reliability I can expect from my first American bike...

Hi Tommy,

If the bike is running fine, the oil light isn't on, etc, I suspect it is the interactive exhaust servo. There is a known issue with this servo on some of the early 06 models and possibly some of the late 05 models I would think too. I've had that code come up on my new Uly more than once but it has never caused a problem with how the bike runs. I got mine to clear by revving the bike and shutting it off before the engine spooled down. I think it may be the damper in the muffler sticking sometimes or maybe just the servo is too slow to react sometimes.

Bottom line is it won't hurt the bike to run it this way but to stop the light from coming on, the bike will need to be taken to a dealer and diagnosed for repair.

Thanks Steve. I may try that. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Anyone else??

I'll keep the board posted of my finds...

If the CEL is for the muffler actuator, it will only stay on if the fault is current. If the ecm had a CEL for the muffler actuator when it was last shut down it will test the actuator the next time the ignition is switched on to see if the fault is cleared. It will also cycle the actuator if you turn on the ignition with the throttle wide open. This info is based on a '04 XB12. I think you'll have to take it back to the dealer. It may not be the actuator but as Steve said it's a known issue. Looks like a few of the new bikes are dropping a little fuel out of the breather hose near the left passenger foot peg, it only did it once on mine then no more.
PS don't worry about the reliability, it will be fine.

Tommy,
If you're getting a code 21 (muffler servo circuit fault) then you need to get the servo exchanged under warranty. There is a known issue with the early production worm gear on a small number of them, the problem is fixed. Get your dealer to talk to the factory and I'll bet you'll get a new servo promptly. If you don't know how to diagnose it, ping me and I'll give you the details.

Oh, and until you get it fixed, ride the thing, you're not gonna hurt it.

One of our local guys had a bad voltage regulator on his new SS. Infant mortality I guess. He unknowingly rode the bike as a constant loss on the battery 'till lights started going out and then no spark. Dealer fixed it right up.

Well, it wasn't the muffler servo.

Got the call from the dealer, and it appears my cooling fan took a dump. Should have a new one on tomorrow. I didn't have the time to ask if it's a known issue, or just a fluke. I'll find out more when I pick it up. I believe he said it was code 36, but I'll confirm. Man am I glad I didn't go on that long ride regardless...

My CEL came on at just over 600 miles on the odometer. I dropped it off on Thursday of last week and as of Saturday they still haven't looked at it. I am unable to get a return call today so far. Not a good sign so early in the game. I hope my dealer is not one of the sucky ones as it is over a 100 mile round trip to him. Diesel is not cheep. Besides I'm getting withdrawal symptoms from not having my bike. Dose anyone know if any Buell dealer can service the bike during first year. There is one 10 miles from my house, I might bring any other problems to them next time.

Tommy, glad they are going to work it out so quickly. To be honest, you would probably be fine without the cooling fan for anything but idling for 30 minutes in death valley, but better to get it fixed.

Code 36 would indeed be the fan. Read this post:

for ino on how to check codes yourself.

Steve.

The dealer just called me back and said it was a code 21. I had to tell him what the code meant. Interactive muffler control. They cleared it and said all is ok. I will be taking a long ride when I pick up the bike to make sure there is no problem. Is this a code that normally indicates a reoccurring problem? From reading the previous post it seems that it will clear itself if the problem goes away. BTW I do not mean to hijack the thread just trying to save bandwidth by adding to an existing thread
