Are there any plans to produce a new 06' style belt for the 03's (without doing the pulley etc. conversion)? How durable is the existing upgraded 03' belt? Thanks.

I don't believe so.

Personally I have resolved to upgrade the pulleys and get the '06 belt when the time comes (soon). Got just over 18,000 on the stock belt and it is time to make the order and just do it.

Rubberdown/Lovematt:

Please explain the issues with the belt. I have an 03 lightening with 8200 miles on it. I have not had an issues with the belt yet.

Rubberdown: Nice fairing where did you get it, and was it costly?

Thanks

Zulu, I made that fairing for a 12S I used to have.I just cut up an old universal fairing that was laying around. I mounted it using the existing fixed nuts that the stock numberplate uses. It looks like I'm getting an 03' 9R so I've been researching the belt. There's quite a bit of info here. Mike.

The 03 belts were prone to breaking if excessively twisted/bent while removing/re-installing the back wheel. They are also more prone to breaking due to stone damage...that is why the guards cover more of the belt on that first model.

'04/'05 have greatly improved belts over the '03 in that the backing is thicker and more substantial. However the number of teeth and their size/pitch is different so they don't fit on the '03 pulleys.

In '06 the belt was even further improved for the Ulysses and supposedly for the rest of the Buell line as well. There is no specific service/replacement interval based on documentation I have seen so far...this does not mean it will never break but it is greatly improved even over the '04/'05 versions.

From what I understand you can get updated pulleys from several sources for about $400 and then buy the '06 belt to go on them. I intend to do this soon as I am coming up on a belt replacement on a stock '03 belt. I have not had any issues with my belt but it has been reported and even documented from the Factory that the '03 belts need more care than other belts.

Belts in general should be treated with care...no chemicals, no solvents, no excessive bending/twisting, etc. is a good ideal with any belt in my book.
