Yup I checked the archives and read the manual but I'm curious how you guys actually test the free play...how much effort do you put in when you move the chain up-and-down ? A prod with finger or as far as it'll go with something more substantial ? | ||

A good prod with my finger. Remember that a little loose is a good deal better than a little tight. I generally hook my thumb under it and put a finger or two on the top of the primary cover and pull it up with my thumb. then I put two fingers on top of it and push it down. When I get right around one chain width of movement (I can't remember if that's warm or cold, and the adjustments ARE different whether it's warm or cold) I know I'm pretty good. | ||

I use a screwdriver or other implement to push it till it levels with the edge of the opening. Which it occurs to me now, is about a chain width. Always use clean tools to probe the inside of the primary case. Never overtighten the chain. WAY loose is better than a little tight. | ||

M1 and Pwnzor, good tips. It's a tight space making an easy adjustment kinda a pain but these tips help. So can you guys fill in with what part of the chain you are measuring too? e.g. top/bottom of chain or using middle pin as guide. Pwnzor, I like the 'push till level with opening' trick but what part is level with edge? the middle pin or top/bottom of chain? Thnx, guys! |
