My 04 XB12s has about 6500 miles on it and within the last couple of hundred it has developed a "squeeling" noise on deceleration. The noise is high pitched and seems to vary in relationship to engine speed but it only occurs when I get off the throttle. All my fluid levels are good and I've been running synthetic since the 1000 mile mark. I can't determine whether the noise is coming from the engine or not, could it be my front wheel bearings? Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Warren

sounds like a wheel bearing to me. try accelerating to 40-50 mph, then kill the engine, step down to neutral and see what you hear while coasting without the engine. if its not engine related you will probably isolate the source.

Ok,
I just got back from trying it out and there is no squeek when I kill the engine and it seems to be intermittant in that is does it less once it is fully warm. Sometimes when I come to a stop the squeek starts while I am idling and I believe I can hear a tiny squeek when I first start to twist the throttle.

maybe check the primary chain tension. I know others have heard a "whirring" sound that some have tracked down to this. Let us know. Good luck.

might need to wax the edges of the belt

sometimes the belt can rub agenst the pulley and cause a squeek

use caning wax and it might help (bar soap can work too but will wash off )

hmm, good tip Izzinya. My belt gets snagged or kinda sticky after rides. when i go to take her out again the next day the belt is all stuck to the front sprocket. maybe that wax will help. no issue, i've just wondered why its stuck the next day. lots of rust on it too : (

I have a squeak, too, but mine is enine-speed variable and audible at tickover so cannot be drive-belt related. It actually does sound a bit like a dry fan-belt but local experts seem to think it is lifter-based

I'll try the wax and see if it helps. Thanks for the tips!
