Posted this in the KV but thought it might get more action here. Has anyone had any experience with this filter from American Sport Bike? Good or Bad. Some say 35 microns is not enough filtering. True or false? Sure would like to reuse rather than toss away. | ||

Personally I like the piece of mind that a fresh filter provides. I can be assured that there are no tiny abrasive particles trapped somewhere in the filter just waiting to wreak havoc on the engine. Also I feel that my bike is worth the $7.00 every few months since it goes a looong way in prolonging your engines life. But hey, what do I know LOL! | ||

Well, if I remember correctly the 35 microns is an ABSOLUTE filtration level...the paper filters average out to be less, but that means that some bigger particles may get through. If the reusable filter is cleaned properly, I'm sure it will provide as good or better filtration than the paper filters. I would get a reusable one if they weren't so expensive. | ||

Hi, One thing to remember about most oil filters is that besides filtering the oil, the filter media is made of material that absorbs and holds acids from combustion. If you use a re-buildable filter that uses common toilet paper or a metal screen type, you won't be trapping that acid. And yes, I realize that oils have additives that help control acid, more protection is better. As far as micron size, I have read that any particles over 5 microns cause wear. There are filters available that filter to less than 1 micron but these are by-pass type, not full flow as on the Buells. I have used these by-pass types on my heavy duty Diesels for over 20 years and with such fine filtration, and synthetic oil, allow me to go more than 150,000 miles on a fill. I work in tech support for a major urban transit operation. We've talked with filter engineers and they laugh at all of the "windowscreen" filters. 35 micron particles are HUGE. Anything over 3-5 microns will eat up your engine. Cleanable filters were originally used on race cars, not for the cleanable feature, but so they could be disassembled and inspected for particles after a race. The best filters today use a microglass element which is much more efficient than cellulose (paper). I suggest you get a good conventional filter and change it at a reasonable interval. Too often is almost as bad as not often enough. Filters, including air filters, need to "break in" by accumulating some dirt before reaching maximum efficiency. Also; use a good synthetic oil. Just don't buy into any of the extended oil change claims. Synthetic needs to be changed same as mineral oil. The extra cost is worth it for peace of mind. | ||

Interesting posts. I know someone who used a reuseable filter and got tired of cleaning it every time he changed his oil. He said it made him dread oil changes. I can kind of see his point. | ||

Call the K+N tech dept. [I have] they will tell you their motorcycle line of filters ,filter to 40 to 60 microns absolute. Cleaning the Scotts filter is very easy, and easy on the enviroment.Instant full oil pressure is a huge bonus, and easy on oil pump drive gears....
