Hi all, sorry i havent been posting much lately but the police academy is kicking my butt. Hope everyone is well. Anyway. I love my lightning but im thinking about trading in for a xb12r. How much different is the handling on the 12r compared to the 9s? And comfort wise also whats the difference? Thanks

Good luck in the academy, but comfort is very subjective, an Electra Glide guy would think my XB12R is uncomfortable where I am uncomfortable on the Electra Glide style bikes. I like the stock seat, the stock bars, the stock windshield and have ridden from Ft Lauderdale to Georgia with out discomfort (with the right undies). A lot of guys change out lots of stock equipment and still don't seem to find comfort.
Only you can tell you what the difference is.

Here is my two cents. I went from a 9s to a 12R and love it. I can stretch out on the R better by putting the back pegs down and laying on the airbox cover for long rides. The 9s was a little easier on turn in I think because of the wide bars. I like the way the 9 puts the power down. I rode a track day on both and I tried to ride the 12R like the 9S and I had a lot of wheel spin from the increased torque. I hit the rev limiter on the 12 more often also since it's set at 6800 instead of 7500 on the 9S. Take a test ride for yourself and make a decision. That will be the only way to find out for sure if you like it. Brupska

I have a XB9R with Heli bars, Touring seat, and the lower "S" pegs. Very comfortable.

The R has better wind protection than the S and I have added a Double Bubble to further improve.

So there are improvements you can make to a stock R to make it even more comfortable.

I am 6 foot, 185 lbs and 52 years old. I have done some all day riding and was very pleased..

If most of your riding is in the city, a lot of stop and go, lights, slow etc... I would think the S would be more comfortable.

But if you like getting out and riding the back roads, once you are maintaining 35-40+ mph the wind holds your body and up and relieves any pressure you might have on your wrist at slower stop and go riding

Once over 60 mph wind blast on the riding position of a street bike (S) can be very tiring especially over extended periods of time

I had a 9S w/race kit , great bike made good power , handled fantanstic but what I disliked was it seemed to suffer a bit on a long stretch of road , Traveling at 70 to 80 mph taxed the 9S ..that was really the only thing a didnt like about it , oh yeah it was yellow I didnt lke that either but the price was right .
So I stepped up to a 12R w/race kit a RED one, First thing noticed was a definite increase of power everywhere ! at the sacrafice of some RPM's ,I did tend to hit the limiter often at first ,but no big deal the power increase more than made up for that 'for me' , highway cruising is now effortless even at 90 mph a little twist of the wrist and the motor lets you know there's a lot more on deck . As for the handling I actually was a little bummed at first because I know that I cornered better on the 9 and began to get the feeling I made a mistake that was until I relaxed forgot about the 9 all togther and focused on how to ride the 12R , once I did that I began to corner just a good as I did on the 9 , it was all a matter of getting used to riding the 12r and not letting the bike ride me .
I'd go for it Man !! 12R is awsome , but if the price isn't right keep the 9S that's just as awsome in its own right .
Sometimes I wish I could have afforded to have been able to have kept both ....Darn , Gonna have to play the lottery tonight ....

I just went from a 03 9r to a 05 12r and the handling is different because of the crankshaft the 12 throws around more force and gravity likes to hold on to the 12 harder so leaning takes alittle more counter steering but well worth the extra investment for the 12
