http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcharley/05_06_Line-up/index.motml Subscription site but here's some highlight quotes: I think the Ulysses' official model designation should be "XB12Swissarmyknife," because it is a tool for every occasion. The Ulysses XB12X caused an acute outbreak of smiles in the first three blocks of our press ride. As my group approached the first red light like a pack of eight year-olds on BMX bikes... rear tires howling and smoking as we slid to a stop, we immediately started trying to tell each other how much we liked these things... ... As we settled in to our 45-minute freeway jaunt, it was immediately clear that the Ulysses' new seat and relaxed ergonomics are spot-on. This is a fantastically comfortable bike... ... Speaking of true adventure bikes, I have a lot of time on the BMW R1200GS and the Buell Ulysses is similar in most aspects, but much lighter, slightly better in the dirt, and slightly faster through the twisties. Compared to a KTM 950 Adventure, the XB12X has a bit less motor and isn't as good in the dirt, but is way more comfortable on the highway and faster in the twisties. In summary: I loved this bike. My group rode it like roadracers (we are) on the pavement and like Baja racers (we aren't) in the dirt. Not too many bikes will let you go that fast in both conditions. And it does have a full two year warranty, not to mention Buell has a decent track record for fixing its recall issues, so if I were in the market for a new bike, there is a pretty good chance I'd take a serious look at this Ulysses. And get this... in the review, that mention that they are working on an upcoming Sport Touring shootout - and they are going to be comparing the 12x to the BMW R1200RT. |
