Trying to plan out a trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway in October, my "lightweight" friends are afraid it will be too cold. Their definition of too cold is different than mine, apparently.

Anybody have an idea what the temps might be in the Roanoke section in mid-to-late October?

Thanks,
Bill

The higher elevations will definitely be chilly but I wouldn't say too cold... but like you said, that is pretty subjective... I'll be touring BRP, eastern TN and north GA the middle of October also...

Xring, keep the speeds below 50 mph when you go through the roanoke area it's a favorite spot for the rangers. On the north end of the Roanoke area is the "Peaks of Otter" section of the BRP that runs right along with route 43. Take 43 in both directions for a ways, you won't be dissappointed. Special heads up for the deer in that area as they are VERY people friendly and like to hang in the corners as you come flying around.NUTS

Thanks, guys. I have a hard time finding historical weather data on the 'net.

I'll just tell my friends it will be "almost 70". :-)

Appreciate the local tips, Nuts.

Too cold means the possibility of black ice, anything above 32 deg farnheit is not too cold. Tell your friends they are wusses (just kidding)

Usually it requires a leather jacket after the sun goes down, but beautiful time to be on the parkway. Heed Nutso warning, the squides have made it rough on other riders on the BRP. Rangers see a sport bike and they will follow you for miles. Also watch out for wet leaves on the access roads, can be as bad as black ice if your not alert. And welcome to our piece of heaven...Charlie

On my way back home from a recent trip to Conn. I took the BRP. I was on my R1 with tail pack and sport touring gear on, riding at a sport touring pace.

North of Roanoke I got behind a car that was going at approximately the speed limit (45) and was waitng for a safe and legal place to pass. I noticed a Park Ranger waiting to pull out from one of the ranger stations right before I legally pass this guy

Waited a couple of curves, no one in sight, and resumed my pace, the pace I was riding at before I got behind the car and had slowed down

About 45 minutes later, you guessed it, I see blue lights flashing. Ranger gets out, puts his hat on and walks over to me and my bike. I take off my helmet and display all my salt and pepper colored hair (it helps to be 52 at times like this)

He asks me, "Can I look at your bike?" Sure I respond. Looks at the bike and then looks over at me and says, "Just wanted to see if you had a speedometer and that it worked...took me 45 minutes to catch you".

I was keeping a steady sport touring pace. He must have been hauling butt in the straights.

"Do you think you can keep it down to 45?" he asks. "Sure" I respond. He lets me go no ticket.

I keep it to 45 for the next 10 miles or so and am going nuts, just an impossible task on the R1. Finally jump off the BRP and get on some rural roads, then take 81 to Raonoke and my destination for the night.

Tomorrow would be another day for the BRP...

Perfect example as to why I mentioned elsewhere, awsome motorcycle road, but not a place to go fast. Between the rangers and overview turnoff areas around blind corners you will eventually get burned. Still love riding it though.

CycloneCharlie said a mouthfull with the wet/damp leave. Nearly as slick as ice and will bite you.

Weather? Our local weatherman are really not the village idiot, but if you were basing that on their ability/inability to give a semi-accurate forecast you'd swear they were.

If it's totally dry you'll have a very good time if your bundled up for chilly stuff. Do keep in mind that if a system pops up, on either side of the mountains, it'll push across the top, drive the temp down dramatically, and you'll freeze your fruits off.

Either way the Pumpkin Center Crew will come up on top to play -- when?

Hey Charlie,

Good to see you too. I try to stay up to date with BWB goings on, but I don't have much to say. When I'm at home the kids normally have me doing maintenance on their Buells (missed about half of the chat deal last night servicing my daughter's Blast -- after service I was forced to 'blast' it around Anderson mountain for an hour or so ; ) .)

I was hoping to make VIR but it looks like I have a contract obligation that weekend. Oh well,,,you called it buddy and time does indeed fly.

Later and take care of yourself.

Man I didn't realize so many of you guys come through Roanoke!
The next time you blow through let me know and I'll show you some very nice winding roads. Two favorites stand out in my mind and are Windy Gap Mountain and Bent Mountain. Both have liberal speed limits and plenty o' twisties and switchbacks.

X-ring, How about going to the Buell Appalachian adventure? It's Oct. 5-7 in Lavale Md. We are trying to get a crew together to make the trip.

It looks like my little group is up to the weekend of October 22; the others have all but nixed it already due to cooler temps.

Trac: I can't make the Appalachian Adventure because of other obligations at work and home. But I'd love to. Lavale is only 3 or 4 hours from home.

Thanks for all the tips.

Xring,
Let me know when you expect to arrive around the Roanoke area. We can hook up for a good meal and then try out the local mountain passes.
Hope to hear from ya!
