What exactly does this new high performance Oil Pump gear do on the Buell website? I was also wondering if there was a way to just buy the black piece that has the induciton cut out on the new 06 lighting models. I have a 03 XB9S and I want the screen piece by my fuel filler. Thanks for any help.

Mitch,
It is more durable than the oil pump drive gear on older Buells.

Some of the tube frame bikes have been known to "eat" this gear by around 15,000 miles. See the threads in the KV for more info. As far as we've seen here, this has never occurred on an XB. Hopefully the new gear will prevent a recurrence of this problem.

thats exactly what happened to my xb12r last month.Luckily I shut it down before anything other than the oil pump was damaged.I ordered the new gear from my dealer,and it has come in already.

How did you know it was going out? Engine light? Grinding noises? I'd like to know that way I can shut it down if it ever happens to me.

Ditto what Kowpow asked.Also,how many miles have you on your XB? I was concerned about that gear also,and was hoping that the XBs were alright.Was I wrong?

Yours is the first XB I've heard of with this problem. Glad you caught it before it was catastrophic.

To any of you worried you might have this problem, it's pretty easy to drop your oil pump and inspect the gear during an oil change. The only part you need is an oil pump gasket. The gear you want to inspect can be viewed through the opening when the oil pump is removed. Turn the engine over a few times to make sure you view ALL of the gear. See the threads in the KV for details.
