Hello. Just picked up my blue Firebolt. About 5 miles away from the dealer, I used the brakes for the first time. I get a "thumping" out of the front brake. Sort of like something is on the disk and making a noise every time it goes through the caliper. I went back to the dealer and he explained that the disk is a full floating type and the noise should probably be expected. He checked all the bolts etc, and looked through his notes from "XB9R School". He said to put some miles on it and if it didnt get any better, he'd call Buell. Anyone else have this? Is it normal and "to be expected"? Thanks

it is normal, it is like the old rotor on the 99 and older Buells that rattled, Full floating rotors will make that noise it is all normal. Been riding the one at my dealer through the conominiums at full speed ( know it is not safe but the closest thing i have to a track) brakes make a noise but work fine.

Roy.
Have they checked the tightness of the caliper nuts on the fork mounting if they arn`t loose. Just a thought. Had that experience before on a bike.

Paroyboy,
I've been on my XB for three weeks now.
Every day to work and back roads on weekends.
I have no front brake noise and defiantly no "thumping".

As far as dealers saying something is normal when it's not, I have had a bad experience and have read here on the board of many others although none XB9R related.

My Sprint ST had two floating rotors up front. They never thumped or rattled. However, they'd sing sometimes

I think I had a little knocking when the bike was new. I only heard it in slow traffic and it went away after I had the brakes good and broken in. Now the full floaters on my Ducati rattle! They makes tons of noise, but damn they work good, just as good as my Buell!

Thanks for the inputs. Was at another dealer today looking for the new Firebolt helmet--SWEET! Didnt have it in my size and the system says it's obsolite already! Gotta love Harley merchandising. Anyway, this dealer said it's not normal but when I told him I only had 130 miles on it, he said to put a couple hundred miles on it and it's a good chance it will go away. Said there might be a small burr on one of the drilled holes. Did notice one other thing...my low beam bulb isnt working. On high beam, I only have one light. On low beam, I have none! Besides that, the bike is a blast. (no pun intended!) Later

Paroyboy,

The Firebolt helmet I saw at a local dealer was a flip-front style that was not SNELL approved, DOT only. May or may not matter to some.

FWIW, my Firebolt (with about 300 miles) makes a "tick-tick-tick" sound on light front brake application.

Sounds like maybe one of the rotor mounting screws might be brushing the caliper or brake pads, though I can't see anything rubbing. I'd like to support the front end and spin the wheel, but with no center-stand I have no easy way to do that.

I plan to mention it at the 1,000 mile service.

paroyboy,
one light on for low-beams, two for high. I thought the same thing.

two_buells,
I'm at 1100. Are we supposed to change oil/filter @ 1000 or 1500? I had the 500 of course. The manual says first oil-change @ 1000, so what's the official word on intervals?

paroyboy,
I misread your msg. Your dealer should fix that light ASAP.

I did my own service at 1000 miles. book says 1000
I didn't reset the TPS like the books says. I need to get to a dealer and have that done. the bike runs bad for the first two min. I think the tps needs to be checked and reset like the book says. I have not had any time in the last month. I was in KC (training near the airport) during and week and home on weekends.
for the next month I should be home! more riding time
