OK, I have 2003 9R with just under 10,000 mile on her. I have really have had no problems with her.

I get up brite and early and go to this guys house about 25 miles, she runs great no problems. We go to the Homedepot in his jeep takes about 1 hour. I get back on my bike and ride to the Buell Dealership (Cycle City H-D in Hawaii) about another 25 miles. Rode it at about 80 mph at 5K. Went there just to check and see when they will be getting the Uly (just to check it out, I WILL NOT get rid of my 9R...cuz i luvs her) anywho I get ready to ride around the Island. I turn the key on and flick the run switch...wait for light to go out and hit the start switch...click, click and the control panel went out and she did not start. I turned the key off and turned it back on, still no control panel lights. I am puzzled at this point so I take my gloves and helmet off (damn right in front of the dealership) so I turn the key on again and I have control panel lights, flick the run switch again, and attempt to start again...click, click and the lights go out again. Frustrated I get out the Torx head out of the back and pull the seat off, check the battery connections...all are nice and tight (battery only a year old) so I turn the key again to see if the control panel lights came back on...Nope. So I then look at the fuses and relays, not really knowing what I am looking for at first (without a manual) pulled the started relay, put it back because its just a box and really could not tell if fit was bad or not (well it was not melted) Waited deep in thought about another 10 seconds. Started thinking well at least I am here if she does not want to start. But I will try it again...turn the key on and I have control panel lights....flick the switch again(wait for light to go out) hold my breath and hit the start switch. She starts right up like she always does. The clock is at 0100 but she is running. so I decide to cancel the run around the island and just get her home to see whats wrong. Ride home another 25 miles at about well lets just say above what I posted earlier still about 5-5.5K. Get home and turn her off and tried to start her again...BAM she starts right up....wait about another 10-15 min up to this point of my post and go back outside to start her up again ...BAM fired right up.

So my question is have any of you had this happen to you?

I know she just might be sensitive and THOUGHT I was going to trade her in...and was just letting me know her opinion.

Just really hoping is nothing else but if it is I just want to take care of it before I get stuck somewhere. I only have a month left before I head back to Iraq and just want to ride.

Thanks for your help!

Shawn

Possibly Over heated? Not sure if the system has an override when the engine temp is too high. But if you were running around, and turned it off.. they say a hot engine only gets hotter until it begins to lose heat.

I've got an 05 12R with about the same mileage and never once have I had that happen.

If it overheats the little engine light will come on. My roommates starter relay has had some problems too, he just put in a new one and they went away. The relay could have problems with it, order a new one and see if that fixes the problem. Or wait and see if it happens again with the current relay and just carry a spare with you.

carry a spare relay any way. i think there only 4 of 5 bucks each and real easy to keep with you if you do need it.

Recheck your battery terminals, take them off, clean/rough them up a little and hook everything back up nice and snug.

The battery connections may have been clean and tight, but you know those wired bolted to the battery go somewhere, right? They have to have good connections at BOTH ends. If the starter/case ends of the cables have never been pulled and cleaned, after 10,000 miles it's likely time to do it. Solinoids are also an issue...they rely on a suddenly closed circuit to connect the pos terminal with the starter and the internal contacts can corrode easily, but a fouled start solinoid would not make your lights go out.

I replace my power setup every year...it's not necessary, but at $20 to make new, heavier, cables with propper crimps, including two extra ground straps, and a new starter solinoid, I can't see a legitimate reason to not do it.

Again...thanks for all the tips guys. Daves...did the battery terminals, now need to clean the starter terminals.

Honestly...I just think she don't like being at the dealership, her feelings were hurt. And she showed ME who's boss.

So, if the Uly is in my future it will have to be when I am back state side. Not that there is a need for one here in Hawaii.

Thanks Again Guys,
Shawn
