Kind of a newbie to the site...great bunch of fellow Buellers on here and some awesome topics...I have an '04 XB12S with the race kit and about 5K. Man, I love this bike. I also have a '91 1200 XLH. Night and day..couldn't part with it, though. XB Fits me like a glove - I'm a strapping 5' 4" 145 pounder - I am running Syn3 in the tranny and I took the clutch cover off to find what looked like white Tapioca pudding on the cover..WTF? This is the third time I changed the fluid myself and first time I have seen this..gotta be water or some contamination but thought I'd just throw this out there to see if it's just me?

I was told (this may or may not be accurate) that water can run down the clutch cable via the rubber boot covering the adjustment bolts, and to zip tie or silicone the top edge of the boot to stop it..

It is water. The clutch cable on some bikes doesn't seal the way it should. There is a thread that tells about this in the last couple of weeks but I can't find it. It is the boot that is in front of the front of the engine, half way down the cable from what I can tell. Mine has been clean so far but I haven't checked it after the last couple of downpours. Good luck.

Water condenses inside the transmission and mixes with oil - this happens in all transmissions (even automatics). The water should heat up and evaporate when your engine is up to operating temperature.

Do you take a lot of short trips?

Is your tranny vent blocked?

Are you shooting water in the tranny vent when you wash the bike?

Jerseybuell...yes, that has happened to me also, and indeed it is water getting into the primary via the clutch cable. Look at the rubber boot immediately behind the rear of the front fender. It throws water directly on the boot...gets into the boot and runs inside the clutch cable to the primary.

I used the wire ties to help seal mine. Anyway, after finding the water I drained my primary, twice again within about 500 miles to make sure I got all the water out.

If Buell or anyone else ever makes a longer front fender that offers more protection to the engine I will definitely buy it. In the meantime I avoid rain or wet roads at all costs.

"avoid rain or wet roads" i see. now there is a solution. spose you could reduce the risk even further by selling the bike?

Hi,

Do you wash or rinse it with a pressure washer? 1800-2800PSI will put a lot of water by seals and cable booties.

Fullpower...I don't think after riding for nearly 47 years I am going to quit because of a little rain...just ride another bike with more fender coverage if I know the forecast....still cannot help but get caught in the rain though...get real.

BTW, I have lived and ridden in Alaska too, from the Haul Road to the Kenai, so I know the routine either starting with a rain suit or putting it on before you even get ten miles from home. Great rides up there...enjoy, but keep the water out of your primary...

Good luck Jerseybuell...

After changing the oil in the primary frequently a couple of times, I lost the milky stuff in my primary (sealed the boot with wire ties also). The white stuff will keep showing up on your clutch cover until you get it all flushed out. You might use that as a guide (no more white stuff on the cover) as to if you got all the water out. I have indeed been caught in several good rainstorms since I put the ties on, but have not found anymore water in the primary. I wish Buell would remedy this some way...that really irked me with the water in the primary. Otherwise, I really enjoy the Buell!

as a matter of habit i put

wheel bearing grease on the threads of the clutch cable adjuster

and have never had that problem

mabey the water is running down the threads

i take that back

on my sporty years ago (before doing my own services) i did have that

havent sence

the grease helps the nut and bolt from rusting also

Izzyinya...yes, I have heard of using the grease...another alternative...thanks.

Hogs...hey back atcha! I am telling my age, but my first bike was a brand new 1958 Allstate 125, 2-stroke! I got it two days after I turned 13 years old and riding ever since...have not regretted spending my time on bikes since then...even after pounding my 650 BSA into the side of of a 1955 Chevy that turned in front of me, ha ha! Ouch, that hurt!

I sure wanna get to Nova Scotia though before the Club Prez (God) calls me home. I think that would be a great ride.

Yes, I was looking at the back of the front fender on the 12X...did not think that would look good on my yellow XB9S, but anything to keep the water out of the primary. I appreciate the first hand report. Did you buy a 12X or just a test ride??? Do tell...

Hey Cyko...,
Yeah how time flys by, and now man ya wake up on Monday, next thing ya know its Friday again :-),

No I did not buy a 12x I really have no use for one and really don`t care for it at all, Not my cup of Tea...Compare to my R it wd. well be like comparing a sport bike to a dirt Bike, No way is it going to handle the roads any where close to the R or S Each to their own.. A whole different Market...I may take one out in a couple of weeks for a blast on the Buell test rides ...but then again I may not .
