I got bored today so I made your ideas come alive. First I pulled the muffler off and then I cut out the tailpipe outlet from inside the silver tip using oxy/acelelene.



Next, I looked inside and located the inner chamber wall. I marked the location so as not to cut into the wall and sliced it open nice & clean with a sawzall.



After cleaning up the cut made by my torch, I fit a piece of 1 3/4" pipe to connect the old outlet pipe to the main inlet(from the headers). Notice I was careful not to cut off the outlet pipe when I removed the end cap. Once I mig welded it in place it was time to replace the end cap.



This was the toughest part of the job! The muffler is made of some really thin gauge steel. I burned thru a few times with the mig. My hats off to that guy Kevin who re-works & re-welds these things! (I can better understand his price now that I see the labor involved and how nice looking his results are)



I got it back on the bike & started the engine. It sounds just right! Deep & mellow but not "loud". It sounds real good when I free rev the motor, and theres no popping as it returns down to idle. I cant wait to ride it, but I've still got a few items to work out on my chain drive conversion. So with no belt or chain on it, I'll have to wait.

If this mod turns out to be as good performance-wise as it is sound-wise I'll be real pleased. The whole job only took me 2 hr & 15 min including removal & install of the muffler.

If it doesn't perform well, then maybe I'll get a drummer after all. (Kevin: would you accept this as a core?)

Any way, Thanks NXTR for the idea. I'll let you know how it runs as soon as I get it mobile!

i'm pretty sure Kevin will take any stock pipe.
He does however go further into the pipe.I had somebody look into it with mirrors. I think his price is very fair. The end product looks fantastic!

Saintly, I am glad to hear that it worked out so well, I am very interested in know how well it performs on the street, please give us a detailed review of your findings.

I would be particularly interested in know about it’s its performance numbers when compared to stock set-up. I am hoping that it takes out the dip and runs a flat line curve.

Again thanks for your effort on bringing this modification from an idea to the street. I am sure it is not only me, but many others who are impatiently awaiting your findings.

I did the same thing for my 12r a while back. The only difference is that I cut the very front off too. I took out the packing in the tip, then welded a piece of sheet metal to make the front chamber smaller. Then weld the tip back on. My butt dyno says an improvement in the mid range. I too had problems with burn through with the thin steel, but I am no professional welder either...

how did the bike run after the mods?

I lost a LOT of bottom end torque. A race ecm helped, but I eventually went back to a stock pipe.

Midrange power was incredible however, but not worth the loss of low end in my opinion.
