My bike for some reason is getting harder to start. When it was newer I could just pop the key in and hit the ignition button without using the throttle and it would start right up after the first two cranks and idle just fine. Now if I do that it take about 5 or 6 cranks then starts then dies. I have to give it throttle for a second or two in order for it to sit there and idle on its own. The thing that makes all the scretching when you first turn the bike on seems to be sounding a little different than normal, im assuming this is the fuel pump?

What is your idle speed once it is started and warmed up?

Should be 1000 to 1050.

Adjuster is the little knob in front of the front cylinder, tucked in behind the airscoop. Turn to right to increase... Carefully - very hot around there...

What is the state of your battery?

Or the state of your stator?
Mine did that before my stator went out at about 20thousand miles.

I've started to have problems like this with my 03 XB9R. Sometimes the starter will click the first time I turn it over and then kick over the second time. Other times it takes longer to start. I noticed that it happened when the weather got hotter. I bought the bike used and I'm sure the battery has never been replaced. I,ve had the same thing happen with cars and would suggest checking or changing the battery. I'm hoping that it's not a stater problem. What are some of the signs of a stator problem?

Well, like we've said, slow to start.
One other clue is, after the engine gets good and hot, you turn off the bike, you'll smell the transmission oil. As a stator goes out it get very hot, and cooks the tranmission oil. A very nasty smell it is too. My fovorite story about this is, when I went in to have mine fixed. They opened the primary cover, and it smelled so bad, the stench got into the show room. It was so bad the GM (Clown) called the fire dept. thinking there was a gas leak!

That would be transmission oil.
