Went for a ride today and noticed that when the bike is cold it would not idle and in first gear around 4000-5000rpm there is a huge flat spot. Once the bike warms up both seem to go away. If the bike cooled off a little bit (while grabbing something to eat, resting, etc) flat spot would reappear for a little bit. If I grab the throttle hard in first gear it will bog at 4500-5000rpms then just explode with power. The only thing I did different to the bike since I started having the problem is modify a 12r air box so it is like the one from American Sportbike. The bike is a '03 9R with race can, ecm, k&n, and the airbox mod with about 4500 miles. I haven't switched fuel stations or anything out of the ordinary. I did do a search on this some stated it was possibly an o2 sensor, other blame air box mods, but no definitive results. Anyone thoughts?

p.s I did cut away most of my air box lid before modifying it to the way it is now. I did not really notice anything. So I really didn't think the airbox mod was the problem, but I don't know. Also no check engine light or anything like that.

Sounds like it could also be a spark plug wire issue, they're a P.I.T.A. to get to, but I'd check to make sure the plug wires haven't vibrated off the ignition coil posts. It happened twice to mine, and I've been back to the dealer once, where they said they put a new plug wire set on (lying p.o.s's) as it was the old, electricity burned plug wires. Left me stranded on the side of the road in the middle of no where in the pouring down rain under and overpass, pulling the airbox off with the dinky little torx tool buell supplies.

Thanx Frausty. I just changed my wires to the updated ones with the spark plugs (pro series aka split fires) in the begining of the season. I'll check em out.

Checked wires and plugs. They are ok. Anything else? Anyone?

you should let your bike warm up for at least 10 minutes...

you should let your bike warm up for at least 10 minutes...

That might have been true in the day of the
carb'd machines, but today's EFI (DDFI) simply
don't require 10 minute warmups. In fact, that
sort of thing is not particularly good for your
plugs. The processors have adaptive
loop routines that do a fine job of controlling
A/F - nee mixture.

That being said, one should not, in any case,
simply start your bike and wail on it WFOT,
but there is really no need for extended warm
ups (in normal climates.)
