Lost my glasses yesterday, considering contacts. Do contacts cause problems at speed? Night? Glasses are a pain in the .

I wear contact on my bike 98% of the time. I like them mainly because I can wear sunglasses under my helmet. This is better for me because at slow speeds when my visor is up I still have protection from the sun, and from debris.

I ride and raced offroad exclusively in contacts. Only once in 29 years of riding have I had one fall out. It was during a motocross race (I was in 3rd place!) in 1977. I apparently forgot to blink for the first few laps because I had never done so well.

What Hanses25 said.

Only problem I have found with contacts is they dry out from the wind, even in my full face helmet.

Depends on the contacts; I always just kept a little bottle of eyedrops in my pocket. Notice I said "kept", cause when I switched to bifocals, I was not able to find a set of bifocal contacts that I like.
Before that, I did 800-mile days with them in with no problems.

Go contacts. You'll never want to wear your glasses.

If you can I would recommend biting the bullet and get Lasik. Other than my bike it is the best investment I ever made.

Mine take a good 4 hours before I notice them drying out.

Disposables are the only way to go. I never had a dry eye problem.

Tahoe,
I can wear mine a full day before I start to notice dryness at night. And as for disposables vs single pair, most places offer disposables exclusively. I have found they are just as cheap, and you can change out to a new pair when the old ones get foggy. I have been wearing contacts for almost 20 years, and I have had no problems with drying with my visor down.

I made the switch from glasses to contact on a lark for the summer - and I'm not going back until I have to.

I've actually weened myself pretty much off of either but that's just me. I'm near-sighted and work at a desk job - 99% of my world is in focus just fine. Just needed to figure that out...

Contacts -

You'll love the peripheral view you regain. Wearing glasses will feel like wearing goggles.

You can walk out into the rain and not have to fiddle-fart hide-wipe your glasses. Might just be me again, but I found pleasure in that too.

Will take a while to figure out how to put them in - don't be discouraged. It will be worth the effort. Hints/Advice: Wet your eyes with a drop of solution first, helps them stick better. When placing them onto your eyes, move them around a little - it will get rid of the air bubble behind them right away and help them adhere. I find it easier to put them on my eyes towards the inside (nose) corner, rather than on the center of my eye...

You'll find yourself rather frustrated getting them out once you've finally figured out getting them in. When removing them, put a drop of solution in your eyes again and then wait 10 to 15 minutes - makes them easier to remove. About the easiest way to get them out is with one hand, stretch your eyelids open and push in a little, and then just blink them out into your other, cupped hand.

I had to Google for this advice - it was not given to me by my doctor/fitters... Pass it on to others eh?

Go with contacts first. For the sake of nailing down your prescription. My first run of contacts were for 20/20 vision, but I found that I lost my near focus. Had to back off the prescription. I think it's like 20/25 now. A very good compromise [for me].

Depends. If I have a good nights sleep, I find on those days my eyes tolerate them much better and they do not seem to dry out as much or as fast.

Ya just carry a little bottle of contact re-wetter in your pocket. It's nothing to worry about.

I had always wore contacts, and never had a problem while riding. When I decided to get lasik, I had to wear glasses for 2 weeks to let my eyes rest. I hated the glasses while riding. I lost my peripheral vision, it was all blurry. Now after lasik, life is grand!! 20-10 vision. Well it's 20-10, and I couldn't make out one letter on the chart. So it's easily 20-15.

I'm sure that they're not for everyone.

Can only add another notch in the glad-I-got-em column...

Depending on your prescription, if you have a problem try a different brand. I've had one brand that was great...tried to switch to disposables and they irritated (they felt thick).

The wife's first pair was irritating her too...she switched to another and is fine (and speaking of potentially irritating contacts, her prescriptions are like -8 and -10).

I tried contacts on my bike a few time but they were to unconfortable and so I went back to glasses. Mind you I have to wear hard contacts. (Perscription is to strong for soft...)

I can wear contacts in most places riding...except here in AZ, the air is too dry here and my eyes dry out way too fast. Otherwise I loved havign contacts for long rides. I do keep a set for when I can ride outside of AZ.

I did the Lasik a good number of years ago.
It was well worth it, I went from 20/600ish [at the time it was the worst eyesite this place had ever done and they originally told me NO] to
20/15 in one eye and 20/25 in the other.
I did it because my eyes started to reject contacts and I did not want to go back to glasses.

My eyes started rejecting contacts about a year ago & I been stuck with glasses since. Riding with them is ok but man it sucks paving in hot weather. I Go through a whole roll of paper towels a week just wiping the sweat off the lenses that keeps dripping down on them. I miss my contacts. I would love to get lasik but I can't seem to save up any money for it as everything I make seems to be going into the Buell these days.

20/600? Damn you got me beat. 20/500 in the left & 20/450 in the right.

Contacts are murder if you have allergies in your local. I do both, usually glasses.

I'm tempted to go back to contacts. I'm still over here in a Iraq and we are told that we are not allowed to wear contacts over here. Well, one young man didn't listen and they had to medevac him because a contact melted to his eye.

My eyes started rejecting contacts about a year ago"

My eyes would get too dry & itchy with the contacts. It would happen steadily sooner each time I put them in. I would sometimes feel the edges of the contacts like knike in my eyes. When I'd remove them I would have nasty red rings around my eyeballs.
These were weekly disposables. I had been using them about 5 years prior to to the problem. I used regular daily contacts for about 10 years before the disposable. Never had a problem with either until last year.

So now I'm giving them a break. I plan on going back to them if I'm able to.
