So I find a really nice two mile stretch of flat road out in the country . And I mean country, no cars, no cows, nothing. So I did a top speed run for probably the first and last time. I had previously gone 120-125 and thought holy crap this is hard to hang on to!! Well today the gauge read barely past 140 and I thought I was going to fly the hell off.

It's funny how brutally hard an S model is to ride at those speeds. Any SS bike can go run 160-180 with ease, this thing makes you a hero. One false move and you get a BIG headshake.

I guess my girlfriend will be happy now that I'll be slowing down. Won't make a habit of this like on my old bike.

I don't think you should have a headshake at any speed your XB will go, you might want to check into that.

Maybe you're hanging on too hard?

Relax : ).

Go over 120 and apply a little bit of pressure to either grip. The front end will start wobbling hardcore. Maybe I used the wrong term.

Over 120 and press on the grip should = a turn, press right go right - etc.

Apart from the wind buffeting I feel like I can ride with one hand, look around at the scenery and have a smoke.

The only other problem with that is, I don't smoke.

I've bounced off the rev limiter on my 12R dozens of times. the worst problem I had was that the first time i was wearing a T-shirt and thought it was going to rip my skin off.

One false move and you get a BIG headshake.
The front end will start wobbling hardcore.

There's something wrong with your set up.
Double check you suspension settings.
Mine's very stable at any speed.

Cupped tires will cause the same phenomenon.

The XB suspension is VERY sensitive. Small changes make a huge difference.

It's not always a matter of how hard the rider is holding on.

Mine feels solid as a rock even at top speed... I'm also small, so I can easily tuck down and get my helmet behind and below the bars...

Suspension, Suspension,Suspension............It can't be said enough. Believe these guys when they say it. I had the same problem on my Firebolt until i actually took the time to tweak the front end.

Sorry to be an idiot, but I set my suspension to the guidelines for my weight, and I'm having the same wobbly feeling. (I have a 2005 city-x with LSL damper). Wobbles (subtley) even at 60mph if I hold on tight while accelerating. Which of the settings should I tweak, how much and in which order? i.e. is a "small" adjustment 1/8 turn or 1/2 turn? Thanks, -Steve

Hey nasty- I feel ya, when I test ride a 9s a my local shop I took it up to about125 130 and I thought I was going to fly off too. I have had many rockets in the past and never had the problem. I really couldnt tuck anywhere, I'm 6 foot tall, I had no where to hide. The lightning is a cool bike but I dont think its for me, I'm still waiting for the right firebolt to come along. I have always been used to clip on style bars, so the dirt track style bars were kinda touchy to me too

i actually set my suspension up stiffer than the book had recamended. I weight about 175-180. if i remember correctly i set mine up for about a 200lbs person. I couldn't tell you what to do for your lightning. maybe its just because you guys don't sit as far forward and down as you do on a firebolt. Another thing to consider is possibly adjusting the forks at the triples to push the front of the bike down a bit. Also have you had your steering head checked lately. I know its a new bike and all but lots of things do loosen up sometimes on new bikes.

I would check:
-Suspension
-Air pressure
-Head
-Wheel and tire balancing

Compared to other bikes I've ridden at high speeds (R1, Gsxr1000, R6 speeds over 130mph). My XB is stable but not as stable as the afore mentioned bikes. Maybe its the wind, the other bikes have a bigger windshield/nose, or maybe the shorted wheel base on the XB.

Screw that anyway, Buells are made for the corners.
