I guess I'm a little confused - why retain the left side air scoop if you now bring air in via the vent on the front of the new airbox cover?

The scoop is still there to direct cooling air to the rear cylinder.

Is it safe to "assume" that both the new '06 outer AB cover and inner filter cover fit '05 and earlier XBs ???

looks very similar to mine from a while back.....only usefull if the airfilter is exposed, releases a little more intake noise if nothing else

does the side air scoop not dump into the airbox any more?

I would buy this new air box cover for my 03 XB. It looks cool and I could plug the old side vent going up to the air box.

That would give me a bit more cooling air to the back cylinder, always a good thing!

True.

It kind of looks like the same airbox outer cover, except for the black piece with the vent. I doubt you can buy that separately though. The inner air box cover looks even more interesting though as it should be relatively inexpensive and should quiet down the intake roar some for those with modified airboxes.

I noticed the 06 City X has the same setup. Hmmm. I might be getting a new inner airbox and buying that airbox cover soon.

This new airbox inlet is a natural to combine with the A.S.B Open airbox conversion kit. Our kit routes the breathers out (for closed course competition use only, of course ) (Buell can't do this due to EPA qualification issues) and looks a little cooler under the translucid covers than the swiss cheesed inner cover.

airbox kit

I'm curious why Buell didn't do it like this to begin with. I was always under the impression that they couldn't due to drive-by noise test limitations. But just like our 9006 CIA CF airbox lid, this provides a less circuitous air path to the throttle body, which has to help the old air pump out. Whatever they did to pass the noise testing, the change is welcome. Too bad I can't remove the opening from my 03 frame to get more fuel in : (

"Too bad I can't remove the opening from my 03 frame to get more fuel in : ( "

Why not?

drill holes (eight should do it) in the upper and lower portion of the "sleeve" that goes through the tank. Cap the top/bottom and you're done... Well, I suppose it ought to be painted too...

As far as why Buell can do that... I would imagine that the sound coming from that location os most likely damped from going too much in the direction of the micro-phone : ).

As long as it's good for the brand : ).

I came up with the chopped air-box idea for the XB (although I wasn't the first to actually do it...) and it's public domain now : ). It's all good : ).

Jeremyh - I was wondering the same thing. That location is behind the windscreen. I guess it will get enough or else they would not have designed it like that. Who knows?

They say the new vent location lends to better fuel economy - so it must be getting plenty of air.

At the moment I cant seem to find the specs on the 05 fuel capacity.
The new is 3.8 gallons, does anyone know what the old amount was?

These new airboxes stink from the point of view that I want one of each color, which means I also have to buy matching windscreens.

It's like an expensive iPod cover for my CityX and my ability to resist calling DaveS is creating a huge battle in my skull

Old capacity was 3.7, IIRC. Filling the hole in the frame was good for about 1 pint, in other words.

sorry i guess i should have been clearer on my question. I realize it will get more air. but what i was curious about is actual Forced air. rather than just another vent to suck from.

i bet it will, i just don't think they would make a mold change dramatic enough to cost them more money on the bike. I would put my money on Yes all the plastic from the new 06's will fit the 03-05 simply because i bet they are still using the same mold designs. It just seems to be the Harley/Buell way to use as many old as parts as they can to keep the cost down, and why spend another 20-100k in molds when you dont have to. As far as the tank bags don't know.

The accessories site says:

Fits all '03-'05 XB models
Newer Tank Bag

Fits all '03-later XB models:
Newest Tank Bag

but you are probably talking about the rectangular bag which is now gone... but based on this image it looks like it might interfere with air flow at least a little...
Old Tank Bag

What I want to know is what about saddle bags for the Ss?
