I see where the 2006 XB9SX will get a claimed 65 miles per gallon on the highway. Short of selling mine and buying a new one, what do I have to buy from Buell to bring my bike up to that spec? Mine's never even seen 45 mpg.

Thanks,

Bob

weren't the 05's stated at 65 mpg highway as well?

I've always found mpg listings to be very optimistic. I could be wrong but it is my belief that they test them at ideal temperatures, at conservative
speeds and probably (but not certain) at sea level.
My 12 varies from tank to tank. The worse I've gotten so far is 44 mpg. The best so far is 50.9 mpg.

If the MPG test is the same for cars and bikes they do them at a steady 48 or 55 mph on a dyno then add a certain % to cover aerodynamic and rolling resistance of the front tires. Seems most companies now figured out how to get the best mileage at that speed. My 88 Mustang with a 5.0 was rated at 25 mpg highway and numerous times I have ran out a whole tank on the highway going 80-90 mph and have gotten 29 mpg. That is with 2.73 gears turning 2k at 80.

I am sure if you keep your XB at 55 mph in 5th gear for 175 miles you should come close to that rating as long as you don't weigh 400lbs. My XB12R gets 47-48 commuting to work and around 53-54 droning at 75-80 mph on the highway. Make sure you keep it below 4k so it stays in closed loop.

I've gotten as high as 66mpg, riding the speed limit at altitude, in the STOCK configuration. I'm 180 with gear.

i'm averaging 32-35 mpg on my 2005 city-x. race can, ecm and American Sport Bike filter mod. not sure why my milage is so crappy, but probably cause i never ride under 4500rpm, and i'm always rolling on or off the throttle. man i'd love to have that 4.4 gallon capacity ...

WOW, 32-35MPG AVERAGE? I got 31MPG at my last track day on a carbed S3.

It's probably a usage issue. Perhaps you never use 5th gear?
I get 55 on my X1 and my friend gets over 60 sometimes on his XB12.

Keep your revs down. If that doesn't work, perhaps there is something different.

Yeah, I use 5th gear all the time. I also hunt for a 6th every now and then.

On my 2003 XB9S (basically stock) I get anywhere from 48-54 mpg. If you get low 30's either you are ham-fisted, or have a potential problem that is killing your mpg (low tire pressure, wheel bearings going bad, airflow issue, etc).

Riding up to Laconia I was getting between 55 and 57 MPG steady between 75 and 85 mph. That's with a race ECM, filter and D&D pipe on a 9R. I'm about 190 dressed.

I hate doing that!

The worst I ever got was 38MPG, the best was 59MPG on an XB12R with a race kit. Just depends on how crazy I get with the throttle. I know one thing, my reserve light comes on way before the .7 gallon reserve.
