On my 2004 XB12R (about 1900 miles) I noticed that the fuel pump seems to have gotten louder. I especially noticed it when I first turned the ignition key to the on position. I would definitely characterize it as even more than a whine, it is almost bordering on a subdued screech.

Is this a sign of imminent failure or are they typically loud?

Thanks,
Steve

I think it's the fuel pressure regulator making the noise. Mine is super quiet somedays and loud on others. Usually it's fairly quiet. It's louder when my fuel gets low. But I think it is typical.

Cool thanks. I'll keep an eye (ear?) on it.

Its not the regulator its the pump itself, and it gets louder when its lower in fuel because it echos in the empty tank. The pump in these bikes are pretty strong units, they have to keep over 40 pounds of fuel pressure to the injectors. They are almost as loud as my 255 walbro pump that I had put in my turbo talon.

If it's the pump itself, then that would mean mine has a intermittent problem and maybe everyone else's. Because when I have low fuel or not it can be super loud or quiet. It does not only do it when the fuel is low (it can even be near silent when I'm almost empty). Seems I've read on BadWeb many times before that it was the regulator and not the pump. Unless it's air cavitating in the pump that's causing the noise? Anonymous probably knows for sure what it really is. I don't worry about it though, because I know it's normal.

Eh, mine can be loud some days and quiet others. Once it was loud enough to make my mother look at me with the "what the hell was that." It's never bothered me nor has it given me any trouble. Just some days are louder than others.

It will get louder the less fuel you have in your tank whenever I am close to empty I notice it more. Less gas =less insulation

The fuel pump noise has been discussed before, so we know this is a common problem. That is what I like about the BWB. We come together and share the perks and problems. I have a whole room full of spare parts thanks to this web, ha ha! At least we know things like this are common...no real problem. So, I will add my dos centavos.

Yes, mine is loud too...seems louder some days more than others. Like Cataract2, I had someone say, "that does not sound good!" It is kind of embarrassing, like the quietness of the engine until you put a new muffler on it..."can finally hear you coming."

I guess all of this is just part of being loyal to the brand and knowing what to expect. I think Eric and crew know what they are doing...good fuel pump, good fun!

P.S. Does anyone know if the fuel pumps on the newer bikes are just as loud? I did not check your bios, so not sure what all you have...

mines been whining for 14000 miles. still works just fine. the Tsubaki 530 sigma xring chain growls a bit too, but is doing just fine with 8000 miles on. cooling fan occasionally has a word to say, usually after a spirited romp. the DRUMMER drowns them all out when i twist the loud lever. all is well.

I guess you are right Ronlv. It is supposed to whine...just as the fan is supposed to come on...just as we are supposed to wheelie...YAHOO!
