i'm getting kinda bored with the look of the xb9r, so i've been thinking of converting it to an xb9s.. has anyone done this? i know i could get a real xb9s, but my bike isn't mint so i'd be losing money on a tradein. just looking for an approximate price for the parts needed.

thanks

lol, that was fast.. i may have to take you up on the offer. i'm still not 100% sure if i want to do it, just toying with the idea, but i'll let you know if i do decide to go for it.

would you have a list or know of one that says what exactly needs to be changed besides the plastics? I'm assuming the electronics in the frontend have to go too right?

RonLV and I did that same swap just a month ago and got both bikes done in about 5 to 6 hours. The swap includes a complete swap of the wiring harness, rear sub frames, head light assembly, brake lines and clutch cable; top triple t, clip ons-handle bars and clamp and mirrors. If you are up to it, it can be done.

IF you can trade bikes, do it. It's not just a 5-6 hr job. You'll need to include time to research your parts list, time to receive and unpack them, time to run back and forth to the hardware store for misc items, and don't forget the time taken scratching your head while examining the best way to do things. 5-6 hrs my a$$.

And then there's the resale value issue. I know I'd rather buy a factory R from someone than a factory S that was converted to an R.

My $.02.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the cost of the parts will only cost you slightly less (parts & labor) than the money you'd spend just trading the one you have it in on the model you want (provided you can find a decent-in trade offer).

I remember talking to Dave at the time. I could have traded for about $2g. I opted to to it myself and am fine with my decision for I learned a great deal about the bike. But if I would have done the trade and worked at the office instead of in my garage, I would have come out further ahead in the deal for sure.

dago you must not be very competent if you need to do all that scratching and cant get it done in 5-6 hours, just my $.02

we did two bikes in 5-6 hours

we can give a list of everything you need to trade

its not that hard

buy a book of the model you are going to

My .02... Been alot of parts on ebay for rediculously low prices. All said and done you could have all parts to convert and change back at will.. should you want too. Give a look and see. Radther have the chance at both than limit myself to just one.

I am looking to do the same thing. Located in Milwaukee, if anyone is interested. I wouldn't think that there would be any hardware store runs, doing direct trades.

Ronlv, I wasn't taking a shot at you. I'm sure you and your helper(s) are extremely competent at hanging hardware and turning wrenches. But I just don't believe it's possible to research/source the parts, received them, accumulate all of the tools you need, AND install everything in 5-6 hours alone.

I easily spent 1-2 hours on the phone with Daves just to define the parts list. Even after that we missed a few items.

Cryptic, it's good that there is now a parts list available and the grunt work has been done already. It sounds like you'll get some good help.

here is what you need for a clean swap if you don't want to have to reroute things for clearance issues, etc;

front upper triple, bars, ignition switch, headlight assembly, horn, headlights, flyscreen, clutch cable, brake cable, throttle cables, gas cap, keys, main wiring harness, new push pins that hold the wiring harness in, rear sub frame, taillight assembly, electricals(fuse box), rear brake reservoir, rear brake reservoir line, seat locks, undertail, seat, shock reservoir bracket, all bolts that go with the parts described

i think thats about it if i remember correctly

you keep your own ecm, instrument cluster, battery, shock

you do not need to swap all the wiring going to things like starter, 12 exhaust, sensors, etc, just the main wiring harness, just unplug everything from your harness and plug it into the new swappped harness

me and marco are not mechanics and we don't even have many tools(just enough to do the job), i did have a mechanic friend of mine there to help just in case we had to cut and splice stuff, but we didn't have to, everything plugs right in.

i think anyone mechanically inclined could do it

important tip; buy a service manuel of the model you are going to, so when all your parts arrive in the mail you will know where they go

good luck, have fun

later, ron
