Sick
I just wanted to show the different seat and handlebar positions
I rode the S3 for the first time since I got the XB. (had to do some food shopping) I have the low S3 bars and the bike felt like a chopper. And it felt like my heels were dragging on the ground!now I think I need a set of clip-ons for the S3

Mike,

Why don't they setup a separate "Mike, Al and Bryan B. on a Firebolt" category at the next Battletrax in Frederick? Neil and I and the rest of the guys will never catch you.

I'm cheating from now on, I'l keep bring my sportster so I can keep winning the Cruiser class!

Well just did the first fluid change at 500 miles. Transmittion took the full quart and the oil took exactly 2.5 quarts. Was very impressed with the windows to the transmittion and chain they have rubber formed gaskets that have two ridges that work like O rings sort of and where each bolt goes in they have brass stand offs or sleeves. Wow how first class is that...way to go Buell guys! This ain't no sporty any more. Only problem was you have to remove the chin to get to the oil filter, then use a strap wrench to remove the filter...man these filters are small....but at least you don't spill oil all over the place... so far so good. But when you go to thread on the new filter there is a interferance with the oil line going to the cooler. The amount of metal on the rooled lip of the filter interfers with starting the threads. Now that is some close tolerences...so the solution is to loosen the line to the cooler, spin on the filter and tighten up the oil line, but the room for the wrench is very limited with the filter in place. So I took a flair nut wrench and went to the grinder to reshape it now it works like a champ. Does this mean a specialty wrench????

Jose,
In the Pa BattleTrax Championship series we have an Expert class for the fast guys, racers and multi BattleTrax winners. That way it doesn't discourage the average riders and we all have a fun event. It also doesn't discourage the first time riders. We had a fun event at Classic HD\Buell today. It was my first time out with the XB. Al Rudy kicked my butt. I was about a second slower. I need a few more laps to get used to the XB in BattleTrax. I still had a great time, its alot different than the S1. Randy and Cory Texter were about two seconds faster than Al and myself, they were riding a Honda XR 100R.

When I rode home today, from the BattleTrax event, my low fuel light came on at about 110 miles. The Reserve Fuell Odometer starting counting miles. I went 30.5 miles, total 140.7 and put 3.3 gallons in the tank. 42.6 miles per gallon.
last tank my low fuel light came on a 128 miles and I got 45 miles per gallon.
Now for you engineers out there......
If my gas tank is 3.7 and the reserve is .7 Gallon did I get 30.5 miles out of .3 gallon of gas or did my low fuel light come on too early? I did hit a hwy on ramp just before the light came on......
I pulled into the garage tonight and had 499 miles on the bike since Wed.

Two buells. I think the light comes on too soon. I also had my light come on but only went 3.2 miles on reserve on this tankfull till I filled up but the tank only took 2.7 gallons. Last tankfull I went about 30 miles into the reserve but could only squeeze 3.1 gallons in the tank. So I agree with you I think the fuel reserve light comes on a little too soon. It also took a couple of miles or maybe it is a time thing to clear/reset the reserve mileage after filling and heading out. I just hit 605 miles this mourning. I feel like a kid with a new toy. Wahoo

Mike

On my S3, the light comes on at around 4.5 gallons, and it's run out of gas on me soon after that at around 4.7 gallons.

How I ever will use the last 0.8 gallons (It's supposed to be a 5.4 gallon tank including the 0.5 gallon reserve), I'll never know.

We should talk to Blaine about that "expert" class. That's a great idea.

yea, it's pretty discouraging to see a guy out there with 3 different bikes, who's been racing most of his life trying to get everyone he can.
i think he even borrowed a 4th. give the beginners a chance to make it look like they did good, and don't be such a hog. no pun intended.

Straight from the Pegasus' Mouth

California issues: There aren't any. CARB requires EPA certification BEFORE it can issue a certification. The EPA was exceptionally slow this time 'round. Erik seems to feel that CARB is actually a great organization. He describes them as a small group who listen to you beyond the paperwork... The whole non-running California bike delivery wouldn't have happened if CARB was a bunch of jerks. I think he said something like 3-4 more weeks for the itchy Californians.

Race Kit: Different stuff has been tested. The last test was higher compression pistons, an ECM, and 'something in the valvetrain'. He couldn't recall if it was srpings, cams, or ? I think this was for the 90 RWHP class. Sorry but I'm fuzzy there.

misc:

He's very impressed with the XB because it acheived its weight and preformance without exotic materials. Good point.

A lucky guy got his XB fairing signed. Nice signature, I must say...

He wishes he had Ducati's racing development budget. I wish I had .1% of it.

I could probably try to recall eveything he said but I've been fighting a losing battle with a migrane that has me seeing lots of visual anomalies as I type. Suffice it to say that whatever nice things you've heard about the guy are true.

Those folks that work for BMC are lucky.

Also, the Ca bike is the same as the 49 state bikes. I assume that doesn't consider the evap system.

If that's a HUGE problem, let me know. My airline ticket to General Mitchell would be a small price for you to pay to have it lovingly broken in by the time your busy schedule allowed leisure. Better yet...spend the weekend with V & N and I'll get it to you mid-late next week.....with 4,200 loving miles :)

I can't wait to hear about your first ride!

Heard a rumor that a soon-to-be released model designated XB12RR will be presented at the 100th anniversary celebrations this summer.

Grrrrr.... I honestly hope not. I would like them to come out with some sort of Race kit first. If they announce a 1200cc version, I honestly think it would kill sales of the 984cc bike. I love this bike and the handling rocks. If it had the 92 HP @ the rear wheel instead of the crank I would say this would be Sportbike of the Year. Once a 1200 version is announced I think most buell buyers would opt to wait for it. I do wonder if a larger amount of torque might not upset the chassis some midcorner. I will truly evaluate my bike in the mountains of NC this weekend I leave for a 5day vacation tomorrow !!

I'm getting tired of people applying tube frame Buell displacement numbers to the Firebolt. I honestly don't see Buell using the XL Motor in anything else, it just wouldn't make sense to use a long stroke motor after all the R&D in the short stroke. As such there will be no XB12...maybe a XB1150 (or something of that nature)

You don't think Buell will market an 1130 cc engine as a 1200???? They "claim" it has a dry weight of 385 pounds, why not "claim" it's a 1200?

3.75 inch bore x 3.125 stroke is approximately 1130 cc's.

If the XB pumps out 94 hp per liter, then an 1130 cc version would pump out about 106 crank HP, figure 90 at the wheel. Getting closer.....

I have always had water cooled/heated bikes since 1982. I was wondering how do the air cooled bikes run in cool weather (about 28 deg f.)? Do you have any plug fouling or driveability problems? Im thinking about the XB, just wondering i need to make a choice. I rode my friends Ducati s4 and the XB both are great . The maint cost and specialised tools needed for the duck are a turnoff. The XB looks better in this regard. Thanks for input.

calling a 984cc bike a litre bike is acceptable it's only 16cc's you will notice that neither Kawi with their 9R nor Honda with the CBR954RR claim to be litre bikes that claim is left only to the RC51, the Superhawk, the GSXR1000, the R1 the Mille, and the Duc998 (OK and the TLR) Honda's CBR1100XX is 1130cc and they rounded down. Harley/Buell is well known for the dimensions of XL motor any claims otherwise would be called BS by the faithfull as well as the squidly.

Smitty

They do fine in cold weather, as long as you keep the battery fully charged so it can crank when it's really cold and let it warm up before you ride it hard.

On the pre-XB injected bikes, you need to roll the throttle open so the bike will start when it's that cold, then you need to keep the throttle open so it will keep idling. You either crank up the idle speed via the remote idle cable then lower it when it's warmed up, or put a throttle lock on the bike. I have and use both methods.

We'll see this winter how the XB deals with this, I would think that they have improved it.

Actually the California BRAG people might have some insights into this as they are dealing with SNOW & ICE!!!!!
