Yes change it now. I changed mine the moment I got her home. I had 75 miles on the ticker. I changed her again at 250. The second one probably wasn't needed but I figured it couldn't hurt. | ||

Do as the manual says. Changing the oil too often just harms the environment. | ||

Well I had every intention of changing my oil at the 500 mile mark. But then the next thing you know I have 960 miles on it. So I am taking it in for it's 1000 mile service a little early. I am switching over to synthetic oil in both engine & tranny. | ||

Follow the manual. Those shavings help break in for the 1k. Todays motors are tight. Follow the manual. Just my 2 cents | ||

If I had the chance to do over, I would have changed it around 100-200 miles. Harming the environment?!? As long as you take your used oil to an appropriate disposal/recycling place, the effects on the environment are minimal. | ||

I did mine after 10 kilometers, then 500. You can have all of my old shavings to loosen yours up if you want drift. | ||

The oil filter will protect your engine from metal shavings, that's what it was designed to do. The gear box will not be harmed by the 1000 mile break-in process, even if some metal shaving occurs. The Buell engineers, who are responsible for the content of the owners manual, know this engine well enough so trust them. | ||

I changed the oil and tranny fluid at 500, and I am damn glad I did. The "junk/shavings" stuck to the magnetic plugs scared the hell outa' me.(but I did break her in kinda hard) I let the dealer do the "1000", and I switched to synth at @1700. Not much "junk" on the plugs at all. So far, so good at @2100 mi. tank | ||

Well I have 820+ miles on my SX and I'm scheduled to have the 1000mi service next Wednesday. This Sunday though I'm planning a 300+ mi ride.. am I tempting fate?? | ||

oh i think i would change it now. then change it again later. then go ride a bunch and change it again. later after you have ridden some more change again. also probably wouldn't hurt to change the transmission oil too, at least once in a while. you will find filters to be pretty inexpensive, and oil isnt so bad yet either, though do expect it to rise some in cost as the raw material from which it is made is getting somewhat more expensive, at least in relation to the (under) value of the US dollar. but that is quite another topic there....... | ||

hahaa, I follow Fullpower's maintenance routine. easy to remember the intervals  i've done changes at ~400 (to syn), ~1100 and ~1800 on the 12 and i'm still cleaning off shavings. doesn't bother me. i'm sure they'll vanish some day. i'll do the next change at ~3000 then kick into the standard, factory recommended schedule. (unless i continue to abuse my little machine friend, which is very possible, hehe) | ||

There is no such thing as changing the oil too soon or too often.Tranny or engine.Oil is relatively cheap,engines and their parts are not!Just my humble opinion.  | ||

I can't think Buell would say change it at 1K if it needed at at 500 miles, that would just cause them headaches given the 2 year warranty. And I don't think they're in the business of trying to make their bikes *less* reliable?????? | ||

Mine was a little neglected. I bought it used from a guy that said the "1K" was nonsense, it had 2k on it at the time. I changed it when I got home to syn and there was hardly any crap on the plugs at all. Since then I change the filter every 2500 miles and the oil every 5000. | ||

I recycle my oil at Advance Auto Parts. They take used oil and batteries free of charge. | ||

How can you recycle oil? It breaks down at a molecular level when used in an engine. | ||

Good link, thanks! I guess their special additives help compensate for the reduced viscosity of used oil. |
