I just got an XB9SX.I'm toying with the idea of putting full fairings ala road race bike. What else would I need beside the fairings? How do I mount it? I know the Firebolt have special cast mounting bracket that bolts in front,do I need this to make the fairings happen?

It would probably be way easier to start with a 9R. There are a few posts on the S to R conversion, read up on it and you will see it is pretty involved. I personally think (having never done it myself, mind you) if you are looking for the full fairings with the shorter tail, going from R to S on the rear is probably easier.

I wanted to mount full fairings like this:

Anyone has any suggestion or had done this perhaps on their race bike? After I figure out how to mount the fairing it's easy to get lights mounted.

Cheers,

it would be easy to do because you have less electricals up front than a r model does

get r model fairing mount, light assembly

you also may have to change bars, brake line, clutch cable, throttle cable ,ignition switch, etc to work properly

your brake line and cables will be long

it just depends on how perfect you want the fit to be

we did a complete(front and rear) r to s and s to r conversion and that wasnt even that bad

its only time and money

YEah,just like that.I'll start by slowly gathering all the parts I need and then I'll do it in one shot. Then take down the fairings to paint it. I like that paint scheme.

Any other suggestions I'll greatly appreciate.

I would be hesitant to enclose an air/oil cooled engine in a fairing - especially if you're going to be do much in-city stop/go traffic.

just my $.02

Let me restate "you would be better off starting with an R. The bars on the S are mounted too far up and back to make any fairing designed for the R bikes work without costly alterations. And that's my $.02

point taken,i'll reconsider you're suggetion.I just wanna line up what stuff I can do to my bike.I'll ride more and If my freeway excursions is to much in terms of wind I'll see if putting fairings is practical.

REDSTER...you might just want to add The XB-R front end to your "S" like I did. It cuts down the wind by a ton. I also added the American Sport Bike rear seat cowl.
To do the R front end, I also had to change top triple tree, bars and key switch.

Hey Gonen60 I'd like to see some more pics of that. Looks pretty cool. When I bought my lightning I was torn between the front of the Firebolt and the rear of the Lightning. You've got the best of both worlds there.

Azullo,

I started out with the R but I like you like the S tail section better. Take a look at my profile for a pic.

I'm picking up my '03 xb9r next weekend, and actually like the tail of the s better than the r.

If you aren't in a hurry to do the conversion, give me a little time and I'd be up for the switch.

I would be hesitant to enclose an air/oil cooled engine in a fairing - especially if you're going to be do much in-city stop/go traffic.

I can tell you from experience, the full fairing will make it run much hotter in rush hour traffic in very hot weather. So much hotter you will come home with red patches on your inner thigh from the heat. Ah takes about a day and the red is gone. But the pain......hope you can tolerate allot of pain as you sit there not moving in traffic but still must keep one leg or the other on the ground. I recently took the full fairing off and it runs much cooler. But I have also heard of riders without the full fairing still complain about burning their legs with these bikes so go figure.
Look here [Coneklr] for pics of my bike.
