My woman wants some long range comfort. So I gotta trade my fun bike for a sport tourer. I have babied this XB since purchase. Never down except when it fell over when I parked on soft asphalt. 8k miles with over 1 year of warranty left. Mods include: Iridium plugs Techlusions installed K&N filter Repacked moded Jardine Custom intake thru airbox Polished frame Chopped and painted tail Custom blue and red LEDs Custom front turn signals 2 Custom seats (for passenger comfort) New Pilot Power tires (front not mounted yet) I think that's it... Not the latest pic with the new mods, but I'll get one soon. |

Uhm, if you have a woman interested in riding long miles on a bike - get whatever she wants. How about a used S3T w/ ZeroGrav windscreen? She'd probably need a ride first, but a used S3 might allow you to keep the XB. Unless you want to do 150+ MPH an S3 tours just as well as an FJR1300. |

Josh: Details on the S3T? The FJR seems perfect for us, But I doubt finding one to trade. |

I second the "get her a bike" suggestion. I think you'd both have more fun (as long as you don't show boat or do anything to make her look bad) & an even bigger bond could grow between you. In other words: You would both ride as equal partners along life's roads. Oh, and there'd be more room for your stuff |

Best thing I ever did was buy a blast for my wife. That along with the riders training course, and collett communicators, make for some good riding. That way she gets to ride with me when she wants, and I don't have to compromise on my bike. Used blasts are cheap, and new ones aren't bad either. |

I don't think my girl would be biker savvy. She's not the safest driver in a car, much less on 2 wheels. |

I sold my S3T to buy my FJR, tho I could probably help you find one The FJR runs much hotter, weight a lot more (like 200lbs, or half again as much as your XB), gets worse gas milage and vibrates too much. On the upside it has more protection, more places to put touring type stuff (ie a larger dash to install toys in), a fuel gauge, anda centerstand. You can pick up a used one with some miles for $9k. An S3 can be had for $5k or less if you find a motivated seller. |

Oh, and my wife has her own Blast. She prefers to be a passenger esp when we tour. |

Josh: You have a FJR??? You are my guinea pig. I didn't know there were so many down sides to the FJR. Vibes more than a Buell???? Wasn't expecting that one. I Liked the power in that 1300cc. |

Just got home from a 2-up 9 day 13 state tour of the North East on the FJR. Just over 3000 miles. Last day was 870 miles Philadelphia to St Louis. Longest trip on the S3 was the Thunder in the Mountains '01 Breckinridge Rally where we did just under 3000miles in 8 or 9 days including a 960mile last day Breckinridge, Co to St Louis. Yeah the FJR shakes more at highway speeds (note that its smooth under 70, so your highway speeds may vary vibrations are 4500RPM and up). To try to make the FJR as comfortable as the S3, I added risers, throttlemeister, gel grips, cramp buster, SuperBrace, PowerCommander and a $500 custom seat and a $800 adjustable shock. I still need to add braided brake lines (the S3 of course came with them, the FJRs are very spongy). The S3 for comfort had the Zero Grav screen, Throttlemeister and gel grips. I sold the S3 for $5500 and paid $12k (plus all the accessories) for the FJR. No change in hell it's $6500+ better. Good thing the hard bags come off easy on the FJR, we removed them at every stop to repack them. The soft bags are a real pain to fit in. The S3 also handles and brakes better. The FJR does accelerate better... |

They only were brought into the country in '93 and '94. The '93 was red and the '94 blue. Mine is actually a '93 with the '94 blue body work. It is a Yamaha GTS1000. It has slightly detuned FZR1000 motor, it puts out a little under 100 bhp. The GTS is fuel injected has anti lock brakes and a catalytic converter. Of course the front end is a one sided swing arm. This really eliminates the dive problems of telescopic forks. It squats instead of dives under braking. This is the most reliable motorcycle I have ever owned. 83,000 miles and no major problems. The bike was actually made til '99 but only in Europe and such. The main reason it did not sell was Yamaha's target audience of the Sport touring crowd and it's high selling price in '93. The bike retailed for 12,999 in '93 that was a lot of dough 12 years ago. I picked mine up in '95 for $7,500 out the door. You can still find good examples for sale with low miles for $4,600 to $6,700. This bike is still a joy to ride. If I could figure a way to make it shaft or belt driven it would be perfect. |

If I was looking for another Sport Tour and could not find a good GTS1000 I would purchase a FJR1300. The one drawback of a GTS1000 is the parts are getting harder to find. I was able to get all my body work replaced, but the ABS pump is impossible to find from what I hear. Though it is rebuildable. |

The other proble is if the one you are buying does not already have hard bags you are out of luck. Givi has stopped making and carrying the mounting hardware, Also Krauser the original manufacture of bags you could buy in '93 and '94 to fit the GTS does not make them anymore. I was lucky and purchased the hardware and bags from Givi and '98 when they still carried them. I have side bags plus the rear trunk shown. My wife loved riding on this bike until we purchased our Electra Glide. To bad you cannot talk her into a second bike so you can keep the XB. I actually agreed to sell my GTS to purchase my XB. Well purchased the XB before selling the GTS and could not get anybody to meet my price on the GTS so I kept it. I was not going to give it away. I think the high miles scared some people away. |

There are currently two on Cycle Trader. This one has side bags. http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/2/0/79780720.htm This one does not. http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/8/1/79212181.htm Both fairly low miles and 6,700 and 5,500 respectively. |

Plus if would seriously be looking for one I also post to a low tech list for GTS owner and could see if anyone knows of someone in your area that has one for sale. A lot of bikes only get posted there so someone that appreciates the GTS has a chance to buy one. |

I've got an FJR in the stable as well. I love it! My wife and I just got back from an 8 day, 4100 mile ride. Me on my FJR, her on her FZ6.

You could always wait til the 23rd....Just because the teaser trailer is leaning towards a Multistrada/V-Strom adventure style bike, doesn't mean a sport tourer is coming too! According to our own Court Canfield and Dave Stueve we have 2 new models coming soon. If I were you I'd wait and see...you may be pleasantly surprised! |

"My woman wants some long range comfort" Buy the lady a bike. For long range comfort my wife rides a Monster: She is good for 350 mile afternoon rides. |

Wheelsleaning - I own an S3T and an XB12S. I own both so I can go riding by myself on the XB and have some "fun" and ride the S3T for sport touring and two-up riding. Best of both worlds. |

BMW r1100sa or BMW r1150rt 1999-2002 for about 7-8000. My wife found that the r1100sa rear seat was too high. Now the rs or rt is much more tour. Plus its still a "twin" BMW hard bags are awesome and will hold a full size helmet, gym bag, or a gallon of milk. And those factory heated grips are nice. |

My fav is the FJR because of its acceleration. The bike has over 120hp at the rear, and runs the quarter in under 11. Ryker: You just made me break a sweat thinking of heated grips. I'm in New Orleans, currently 97. Last Christmas was 74. |
