Hi all,
Well I know some of you would say what the hell took you soooo long. I have some excuses but they really don't matter. I just have not been able to find as much time to ride as I'd like. Plus with my current recovery from wounds received in Iraq I have taken it easy. But my XB9SX is now past the breakin miles. I have 560 miles on my bike and it looks like it will be a nice week here in the PNW so that I will be riding every day this week if I can.
Now on a side note I just traded my stock seat for a SL seat with a fellow BWBer. I really like the way the bike looks with the seat. And today I took my GF out for a ride on her new bike. She just past the Motorcycle safety course and wanted to go for a ride. She just bought a 2004 Ninja 250. So while we were out riding I started playing with my bike a little. I started pulling 1st gear wheelies. I it down okay but need to practice some more. I have never been able to do wheelies on any of my other bikes. I know not a big deal to some but a big one for me.
So I have 500 more miles before I need to get my 1000 mile service. So I plan on switching to synthetic oil. From what I am getting from reading everyones advice I want to use Mobil 1. And then gear oil in the primary & engine oil in the oil tank?
At this time I am not planning on any mods to my bike until next year. Then when I do I'll be doing a F.A.S.T. intake, Drummer exhaust & race ECM. If that isn't a good idea I'd like to hear why & what I should do instead.

If you haven't already done so, I would change oil and filter, use HD Dino for refill until you hit 1000.

At 1000, it would be Mobil 1 15W-50 in engine, 75W-90 in trans.

I went with the factory race kit and am very happy with it. 12 Air box on my 9 also is a nice addition.

Best of luck and thank you for your service in Iraq. Hats off to you!

Did my first service @ 500mi. Dealer said they would take anything over 500mi for first service. Was stumbling off idle so I did it ASAP to reset TPS and such.

Get your TPS reset by the first 1000 miles, switch to synthetics and ride the balls off it.

Throttle Position Sensor. If it is not set correctly your bike will run like crappola. If it is running well now it is probabaly ok. If you do any mods like exhaust or upgrade the ECM (electronic control module) you need a TPS reset. Dealer does it or you can buy software to do it. Do a search you'll find tons of info.

Why do I need to change the oil at 500 miles? I thought the first service was at 1000? Not trying to be cheap & I'll do the oil change just trying to understand. Also are you saying I can just take it in say at 600 miles and have the 1000 mile service done & switch it to syn oil now? Sorry for sounding like such a nub, just don't want to hurt my bike. This is only the second new bike I have ever owned. And the last one was back in 92.
Just need to know if I should do that oil change now because I have a ride to do this weekend.

with very basic tools and knowledge you can drain and refill the oil at 500 miles, mainly to clear out some of the "production crud" that may be in there. I did that, not even a filter change, just the oil change at 500 miles, and had the dealer do the 1,000 mile service. It cost maybe $7.00 for the oil, and if nothing else, gets you Bike Karma points.

Ya my dealer said they would do the 1000mi service any time after 500mi. I did mine early b/c it was stumbling off idle and wanted to get TPS reset ASAP. So instead of taking it in to reset TPS and then bring it back a few hundred mi later for service I just did it all at once.

I changed my oil and filter at 100 miles and am about to go outside and change oil/filter again at 500. Includes primary too. Should have seen the oil at 100 miles, lots of microscopic metal flakes, and the magnet on the drain bolt was covered. I think changing it at 100 is even more important that 500 but most people don't do it.

Much better Nasty73z. I changed my oil at 100 km (60 miles). The oil felt really good but there was so much crud in it, it was amazing. I do run a bike in by loading the rings from second one after the engine has warmed up (sometimes called the "alternate method" ) from the first start. Of cause I did the first 100km on the first ride. Wildman4x4nut, the first oil change is to get rid of the production muck and (if you have bedded your rings in) worn off ring and cylinder, if the aluminium gets back into the engine it can coat moving parts and thats not good. Oh and I would stick with dead dino oil until 1500 miles before getting synth in there. Still if the rings arnt bedded properly it wont make much odds.
