Any advise to a site where I can get instructions on how to correctly remove the rear wheel on my Lightning XB12S? Shop manual is on back order. |

Did you try ordering the Shop manual from Daves at Appleton HD, one of our sponsors? He usually has them in stock. |

Certainly, there is no substitute for the service manual, but until that comes in for you... Also, you could do a search and probably find a better answer, but I just removed the rear wheel on my 03 XB9R, so it is still fresh in my mind... 1. You will have to remove enough of the belt guard(s) in preparation for sliding the belt off from the rear pulley. On an 04, you may not have to remove any of the belt guards as they were redesigned on the 04 models and beyond (and may allow you to skip this step). On the 03, I have to remove both the upper and lower belt guards to get them out of the way enough to allow room enough to slide the belt off from the rear pulley. 2. You will have to remove the rear brake caliper. It bolts to the swingarm on the 03 with just two bolts. You may also have to unbolt the rear brake line holder (attached to the top of the swingarm) to allow the rear brake caliper to pivot out of the way. (Just remember: never allow a brake caliper to hang from it's brake line) 3. [Thanks to Honu] Loosen the rear axle pinch bolts located on the bottom of the swingarm on the belt pulley side. 4. Then the idea is to loosen the rear axle just enough (without completely removing it, usually around 15 turns but YMMV) to give you enough clearance to slide the belt off of the rear pulley. On the 03 models, it is EXTREMELY important to be gentle with the belt - no twisting, bending, or using any kind of tool to help pry it off. The 04 belt is supposed to be stronger and more tolerable to twists and bends, but I would not take the chance. Just work the belt off slowly and by hand, a little at a time where the belt is in contact with the rear pulley. 5. Once the rear brake caliper and belt are out of the way, completely remove the rear axle and the rear tire will come right off. When re-assembling, the service manual suggests using an anti-seize compound on the rear axle threads. (Message edited by fdl3 on July 11, 2005) |

I do have the manuals in stock but it sounds like you have one coming. Call me tomorrow late afternoon and I can copy the pages you need and fax or email them to you. 1-866-757-1653 ask for Dave in the sales dept. |

Loosen the rear axle pinch bolt before lossening the axle itself, it is located at the bottom of the swingarm at the axle on the belt side. You will need some torque values for the assembly process, I have an 03-9 so not sure if torque values would be the same. |
