I've just swapped my seriously rusted, 2300-mile 12R muffler for a 250-mile 12S unit from eBay (with a break to catch the MotoGP and AMA SB races, of course.) I'm wondering, how many of us who've modded or worked on our exhausts have followed the service manual's instruction to replace the front hanger and Torca clamp (header)? It sounds like a good idea, and it shouldn't be TOO expensive. But I'm wondering how much of it is due to the HDI Corporate Legal dept's influence, and how much is due to any real danger that I'll one day find myself trying to ride over the muffler and chin spoiler... I guess that begs another question: if you've put on an aftermarket pipe, did it come with new clamps? | ||

Um, not sure but I think from reading the posts, that is the clamp on wycked's bike that came loose and catapulted him like superman. If that is the case, I would definately change it. jd | ||

Yep, Wyckedflesh's apparent 'fun' is part of what prompted this question. I haven't searched to see if he's made a longer post on it. The D&D's come with new clamps, front and back. I'd say better safe than sorry, go for new clamps. | ||

Firstly, the clamps that came apart on my bike were not the stock clamps. My exhaust was a custom fit job that had a different type of clamp fail. WRT the stock system, the clamps and bands that are used to hold the exhaust in place are all spring steel type of material that is ment to be torqued ONCE. Most of the clamp failures that have been reported have been from people reusing the clamps they just took off. A material that is not ment to be retorqued starts to weaken the moment tension is released. When you then retighten it, your basicaly trying to make it change the shape that it was in to a new shape. That further weakens it. Buy a new header clamp and a new set of exhaust bands. The money spent is worth more then the possible hospital stay. | ||

Thanks for responding, Mikel. Again, I hope things are getting back to normal for you. Are you rebuilding your scoot and/or have you posted on the progress? Back on topic, sort of- I took some pics of the (amazing amounts of) surface rust on my muffler, and will share when I've resized them. All I can figure is that I should've hand-washed it on New Years' Eve when I rode it to work and back (10 miles, round trip.) Seriously, I put on maybe 35 miles during the months when there'd be salt on the roads and temperatures would be too low to wash the bike. I'm surprised over the amount of rust I have on a year-old exhaust... Anyway, time for bed. Tomorrow, part numbers for the hanger/clamp! | ||

Wycked, the best advice I can share is to try to leave the sadist (er, the physical therapist) frustrated and bored with his/her inability to come up with something you won't do without question. I've never been in your spot, but I did have fun with cutaneous delivery steroids for a rotator cuff injury a few years back. "No, that doesn't tingle or burn- go ahead and turn up the current to max." D&*$ed if I was gonna sit there for an extra ten minutes listening to this guy making grown-ups cry. And thanks again, you've saved me some time there! I haven't bought the parts book yet. | ||

parts book? hell, I took those off the boxes  but the partsbook is a very sound investment  PT doesn't bother me. There is only so much they can do to me as it is and well, I do more at home just trying to get the bike put back together. | ||

Sorry wycked, I just wanted ta point out that your clamp failed and he should buy a new one. Didn't know it wasnt stock, and wasn't sure if davefla knew about your crash. | ||

I have had my stock muffler off twice. have re-used the oem clamps. put on drummer, then removed it to cut off the hideous ly ugly chin fairing brackettry, and wire wheel and repaint. the chin fairing and associated brackets and harware came to 2 pounds 12 ounces. good F'in riddance. now i can change my oil without a damn torx wrench. any way back to the point of the thread: if you dont ham-fistedly over torque the clamps, they should live a long happy life, and should not magically become useless after a single application. |
