This winter I'm going to have my Step-Brother do a custom paint job on all of my plastics and I also want to do the oil cooler, left scoop, right scoop (after I buy one), pulley cover, rear fender. My question is, should I just paint over the stock plastic and by the fiberglass right side scoop because it is cheaper, or buy the carbon fiber and paint over it. Is the carbon fiber really more of a waste of time than anything since I'm going to paint it? I'm not really concerned with the weight reduction, but I do want to make sure that the paint will look good and be durable. Thanks guys!!!!

If it's being painted, I'd go with the fiberglass.

What do you think about the other parts? Like the stuff that is black plastic from factory? Should I just have it painted over, or buy all fiberglass and carbon fiber stuff b1efore I paint it? I'm glad you said get the fiberglass right side scoop because that is what I was thinking! I don't want to waste a bunch of money just so I can say it's carbon fiber, especialy since I'm just going to paint over it. I've also heard that the carbon fiber starts to turn yellow after a while anyway. I think cf looks cool, but I think that the dark blood red I'm going to have it painted will look better if I can get as much as possible on the bike. I'm also painting the frame, swingarm, forks and the dash satin black before I do the blood red. I'm thinking I'll end up with the Villian Black wheels on it too.

If it's all going to be painted than I'd just paint over the stock plastic. It will all look the the same after it's painted so why buy all new stuff unless you think you may want to go back to the stock plastic look in the future.

I'm trying to visualize the color scheme you describe & it's looking good

Someone recently painted their XB and included the oil cooler. It looked sharp as hell. Id say paint anything that you can get off the bike the same color and it will come out awesome. I am a big fan of black so if you leave them, I will still like the look.

Olin,
You've GOT to post some completed pictures when you're done! I've been wanting to paint mine a similar color as the red R1's.
This color.

Is that what you have in mind?

Yeah, something similar to that, but I think I want a little more black in it. You know I didn't even think about it when I was deciding a color, but that bike on that link is my dream bike and that might be where I'm getting my color scheme from without even knowing it. Of course, I love my Buell, but if I had the money that red R1 would be my #2 bike for sure!

I'm going to take pictures of pretty much the entire process, and I'll make a thread about it when I'm finished with it. I have stock pictures, then from some mods that I'm pretty much taking off and the work leading up to the finished product. I just started taking everything off last night, but I didn't get very far because I didn't get to my friend's shop till after 9pm. I'm going to the shop straight from work today, but of course I forgot my camera. Oh well, tear down pics aren't going to be any different tomorrow than they will be tonight. By the way I'm attempting to do all this work in the next couple weeks because I'm moving back to Kansas City in 3 weeks to a month! I'm going to be at that shop constantly to make my time frame! My friend that is a Harley tech seems to be almost positive that he can just adjust my clutch without replacing it since I only have 5K on the bike and this is the first clutch issue I've had. I'll keep you guys posted, and be looking for my mod thread in the upcoming weeks. By the way, I'm only doing the black now and then I'll have my step-brother do the painting over this winter. I've also been advised to just get my wheels striped and powdercoated black instead of selling them and buying the villian black wheels. That sounds like a good idea to me, what do you guys think?

My bike is red actually. All I'm painting black is the frame, swingarm, dash, triple tree and forks for now.
