I Went to the HD/Buell dealership today in Portland Maine..walked up to the parts counter with oil and filter asked the parts counter guy for O-rings and gaskets for an XB12R.....He looked at me with those lost hotels in his eyes and said with a smirk "Whats that a Honda or something" I just turned and walked away left the stuff on the counter.....I will go to the dealership 1 1/2 hours away in Merideth NH where the counter man (Dave) rides and knows Buells.
I bought my first Harley over 40 years ago (125cc) at the age of 13 had a bunch more since then been loyal but I am getting real short tempered about the way the parent company is pushing the Buells to the back of the bus. They can have a whole rack of HD outfits for your pet dog but can't hire a counterman that knows what a Buell model number is without saying slowly B U E L L X B 12 R

I had a guy ask me if I wanted Chrome or black when I asked for an oil filter, I restated "Buell, XB 12" as I thought maybe he jumped on the X and the 12 and assumed sporty, but nope, he said again "Chrome or Black". Of course when he handed me the H/D filter, I suggested he look up the part number in the Buell book. He was puzzled, and surprised to find out it was different. No harm no foul, but it would be nice if they ( parts ) and service for that matter, knew more about the Buell line

My dealer really takes home the prize......they don't stock any Buell parts, and then want to add a "special handling fee" whenever I order something. For example, when I ordered a service manual, they wanted to charge $4.00 extra to order it (above the $58 price of the manual).

Sheesh, and they wonder why I ordered the manual..........ya think I'm ever going to let them work on the bike???

To sum all this up....

The wheel is turning, but the hamster is dead !

These guys are definitely depriving a village somewhere of their local idiots....

End of story.

Does that mean I get a NEW Service Dept? : ) I know a mate right now who's XB got nailed by a cage, he will get insurance, but he's not sure if he can handle getting shafted anymore if he gets another XB...

Dave at Merideth is the King of Buell Service. I bought my last tire there, they had it on short notice and installed free. Still waiting after 10 days for my now local dealer to get the tire. Full list PLUS install labor. Oh well.

I stopped by Big Moose a couple years ago and they seemed pretty Buell friendly...maybe things have changed in a couple years.

I will admit though, Dave King in Parts at Meredith HD is almost as awesome as Dave Stueve. I'm part of that BRAG club so I get 10% off there too. If I can't get it from Dave S. (if he's off a day), I can usually get it from Dave K. (because I always need stuff sent out asap).

I just returned from a CT to Maine cruise. Are you talking the dealership off Riverside? Portland is a nice area and it was a lovely holiday weekend for riding.

For some reason, competent parts people are hard to find. One recent order from my local dealer had 100% of the parts incorrect. That ordeal took over a month to resolve and I could never figure out why: every part I needed was a Sportster part.

I went to another dealer out to town to get parts. I figured if I always had to order my parts anyway, I could go anywhere. The next order started a chain of events so ridiculous, it could match any Greek tragedy. Every single thing that could go wrong, went wrong.

Based on the real problems I've had, I wouldn't have gotten upset with that parts guy's comment. If he could get the parts you needed correctly, he is worth his weight in gold.

When I snapped my right peg off last week, I was pleasantly surprised that the parts guy at Williams HD in Lebanon, Jersey remembered my name, knew what bike I owned and had the part in stock as well. I really think its getting better. Still no Buell stickers or clothing in stock though.

On the other hand I was in the same dealership at the same parts counter on the 5th for a filter (got oil from the rack across the asle from the counter) Asked for a filter for the blast. I was asked what year I told him he walked out back and got it. I haven't had any problems with the parts people there. (I do like dave in NH and he has been a great help when I am over there.) The only problem I have had was with some of the sales people who did not know what an XB12CG was. I had to point it out on their own web site and then locate it in the storage building for myself. In fairness one guy they called over did help, but only after the other two still swore up and down that they had never seen one and it did not exist and the web site was wrong. They were wrong and I did see it. It was parked in the same spot that I had been when the picture was taken and it was still red. With that one time being the exception I have had no problems with them.

All my dad needed was a local dealership to fax a paper to his credit union for him to be approved for the softail he wanted and they screwed around and he went to iron valley and got it. I had a deposit with the local dealership for Xb9r and was dealing with the owner and he continously would not return my call and couldn't find the bike i wanted. My dad's salesman at iron valley found one so i got it there.

Some of the "problems " with oil filters seems to be an error in the parts book my dealer had.

i dunno... Court?

I know the shop I like to go to to talk bikes
the best. Wouldn't buy a bike from them, but
their parts counter guys are top shelf.

They got some younger dudes that they really dig
buells and this other guy knows his harley parts.
They will talk BIKES!

As far as these other $#!+ dealers out there
they have good and bad people in each of them
I suppose. It's a personality thing.
However, one thing you do not do if you are
a dealer and selling BUELLS is dis a customers
Buell ! I don't care if they lie about liking
the Buell or not. Now I will NOT buy ANY buell
parts from that place. besides I know an online
shop that sells oem parts at 20% discount ALL
the time !

Or the customer themselves. When I had my 1998 S1W and it was new, the battery had failed for the second time and they refused to warranty it, with 1500 miles on it. The parts counter mgr said it was $115.00 for a battery and I said that there was no way I was going to pay that for battery with a design flaw that would fail again. I would go to Walmart and buy one. Well a buddy of mine was in the shop and the parts people were having alot of fun at my expense for buying a battery at Walmart (for $50.00). Of course I heard about that from my bud. But one of the parts guys was great, so it just depends.

Well, I had a completely different experience today.

I put my '05 XB12R in the shop at Ft Washington HD/Buell last night for service today for it's 1000 mile service. As they promised, it was completed. I however was late, and lost. This was only my second trip to the dealer, on the way up there last night I was lost too, and got there from a different direction than I'm supposed to.

Tonight, I was to make a left on "Old Fort Rd". Well, as I soon found out, there two of 'em about 2 miles from each other. No chit.

I was almost 40 minutes late, AFTER calling them and telling them that I'd be 5 minutes late at 7pm, when they were supposed to be closed already.(I got lost after the phone call, and naturally, no one would answer the phone after that.) But I got there, and 3 people including a SMOKIN' female...I dunno ANY of their names, but I will make a point of GETTING to know them now.

They were there, waiting for me with my bike. No attitudes, no bitching, nothing and they even offered to help me further by giving a hand to load it in my truck. I didn't need it, and sent them on their way.

$254.49 for a 1000 mile service WITH Synth. Oil.

I'll be going back there to order a new tank set and other goodies for the Springer. It took me 1-1/2 hours to get there, and I have another HD dealer 20 minutes from me, that lost my business because it was very apparent on several instances, that they didn't need my business...and no, I wasn't late for any appointments there.

Next on the agenda is to free up some time so I can join DC BRAG!

Good move.

You're not the first to have good things to say about this dealer. I gotta check them out.

Have fun,

not sure if they deserve a butthole award or not, but Latus in Gladstone Oregon could use some serious help in the Buell department. Watching the "tech" learn to work on Buells while serviceing mine was comical in a not so funny way. Watching him stare with a lost look on his face, go get another tech more than once and both of them look at it with a confused look, scratch their heads and continue on was rather uncomfortable. That and the fact that the two new Buells in inventory where in the far back corner with no signage at all and not so much as a Buell t-shirt in house will have me going elsewhere. They also balanced my new tires contrary to the manual (after I mentioned the Buell manuals tire balancing section) and then wouldn't agree with me on it until I quoted the page number and made them look it up. All in all a not very smooth experience.

I went to get an oil filter for my XB9S. The HD guy at the counter asked "What year?"

That happened LAST YEAR!

I cannot trust the dealer I bought from, and I prefer not to support them anyways after my buying experience there. The one other dealer within 6 hours has sold "very few" Buells, and has never serviced one, or so they say...

Luckily, I am confident to do my own maintenance. However, if they want to sell more bikes, their dealer network has gotta be fixed!

I am still waiting for my local dealer to call me back for some warranty work that I wanted done (fraying underseat wires, leaking oil cooler, some other little stuff) that Bruswick HD (NY) fixed for me about two months ago.

we need to sever all ties with these h-d dealers.
i'm pretty sure it will never happen...but,
if it did. how would you like to go down to your local Buell dealer? no tough guy dentists lining up to buy "live to ride" hats and derby covers (scheduling their instalation anyway). only Buellers! well it'll never happen so buy the parts book and service manual (most recent edition)for each of your bikes, and learn to wrench or start hangin with Buellers who do.
