Hi Everyone -

I'll thank everyone in advance for their help and opinions. I have an XB9SX. I have already trimmed the snorkel all the way to the top (snorkelectomy). I still have the stock air filter and the stock uncut 12 airbox. My question is: will it hurt to run the race ECM with the stock air filter and stock exhaust for a short time (~1 month)? Could this cause problems? I then plan on buying the K&N air filter and an aftermarket exhaust. I won't state which one so this does not turn into a pipe thread. Thanks again.

Chris

I've always been curious about this question myself. My only concern would be that it would run a little rich in its mostly stock form. I'd try it for a little while if you've already got the ECM in hand. If it feels boggy when you stab the gas under 4000 rpm then you'll know it's too rich. I can't say enough about the race ecms. I put my stocker back in the other day just to feel the difference and WOW! Don't get me wrong, the stock ecm is no slouch but the race ecm turns it into a different *meaner* animal. The popping on decel came back with the stocker too.

I think it might run rich. I would just wait until you get the pipe and filter and then install the ecm.

Maybe slight OT, but this has been bothering me for quite some time. Has anyone tried to hook-up a piggyback unit, such as SMT6 for example, to their bike? Is it possible at all to connect SMT6 to Buells ECM, and if not - why? I know quite a bit about tuning cars, but don't know anything about tuning bikes, so please excuse my ignorance : D
I was thinking about playing a bit with a piggyback keeping my stock pipe.

I have a dyno with a fuel air plot posted somewhere here of a 9sx with the race ECM, cut airbox, but stock exhaust.

Dave is exactly right, it goes rich (peaks at 12.5:1) between 2800 RPM and 3500 RPM. It probably averages about 13.2:1 for that range.

Other then that band, it is not any richer then stock, and is in fact leaner from 4500 to 5000 RPM, where the stock ECM runs leaner.

The ECM must really richen it in that range to make better power down low. Have a look.

I just had the race ecm installed with a K&N, XB12 airbox, snorkel removal, and tps reset.
I thought I could run this configuration until I decided between a D&D and a Drummer for my XB9.
Well, without an aftermarket exhaust it really runs like a bag of s**t. She barely idles (stalls occasionally) and backfires occasionally below 3000 rpm.
I've only run her for one 20min ride. Maybe it just needs a little more time.
Anyway, I know this subject has been beaten to death before but if someone has experience with the D&D and Drummer on a XB9 I would like to hear your opinion. I did a search and most of the reviews seemed to involve the XB12.

Most of all the threads I've read had everyone leaning toward the Drummer for the 9 & the D&D for the 12. Many like the Jardine & the Special Opps for the 12 as well but on the 9 it looks like the Drummer is the reigning Champ.

I run D&D race ecm K&N 12lid and desnorkafied on a '03 9,It sounds KILLER when I'm NOT riding it but when I am it just sounds too raspy n noisey,(The pipe AND the valvetrain)((Think i have something wrong tho.))I still have my stock pipe and plan and drummering it eventually.(Probably after the stress crack on the front mount of my pipe breaks)(Like its done to more than one person).
