Okay, so I happened to be checking things out and what do I see???



Notice on the bottom edge the little sleeve? It seems that they only put about 3 inches of that protective sleeve where it would rub on the frame. Every other XB I checked yesterday had the sleeve going all the way up past the forks.

The dealer will warranty it without a problem. Now I just have to get the bike there on a day that the service department is open. Yippee. Too bad they can't just send me a cable and I can change it myself.

Ah well. Has anybody else run into this???

Sorry...the wear spot is right where the right fork tube rubs on the cable. Although this pic is blurry, it's from further away. You can see that short piece of tube where the cable goes against the frame? That's supposed to go all the way past the forks. I've got the wheel turned all the way left so you can see the cable. if the wheel is straight you won't notice it.



The problem is that the dealer is three hours away. How much is a clutch cable again? Might just be cheaper to buy one. Saves me the hassle.

I'm gonna laugh if I'm the only person with this problem. It seems like somebody out there should have come across this? In case you're wondering, the cable has never been changed.

Mine has signs of this also. Only difference is mine has those rubber covers on the cable where yours is wearing. So my main cable housing is protected from this.

This first picture is of the wear point. Notice how ever though it's slightly worn you don't see the cable. Just the rubber cover is worn.


The second picture shows the wear spot and where you can see how there's two rubber covers.


I noticed that on the fork there's a slight ripple effect to it where it's wearing. I have a feeling that's acting like a file and it's rubbing down the cable a bit.

One other thing - I slid the boot up to adjust the cable. Well, the top of the boot should fit up to the rubber housing. Since mine doesn't have the rubber housing, the boot isn't flush to the cable. The adjustment nuts were completely encased in dirt, and after scraping it off I see that they are rusted solid.

I've decided just to buy the cable and change it myself. The gas and the hassle add up to more than just the cable.

Cat - I'm wondering if it's the vinyl wearing the rubber, or the other way around. Rubber dragging on vinyl may have created the ripple you feel. Just a thought.

On my 2005 12R, the fork has a protective plastic "tape" applied to it. It came from the factory this way so they must have acknowledged the problem. There is also the same clear tape protecting the fork from the brake line.

Radioshack sells spiral cut loom - as does many online shops. It's worth it to get a batch and go over cables and wiring and add a bit of protection. In addition to clutch and throttle cables, spark plug wires and brake lines come to mind.

Crusin, take a look at my 2nd picture. You'll notice how the fork has 2 different shades. The top and bottom are one shade and the middle is another. The middle area is what I'm talking about with the file feel to it. One way or another my cable is protected well enough.

Also, yours sounds like it should just be replace with one for the 05 models. That cable seems to be way better than yours.

The funny thing is that we checked other bikes - even another 04 XB12R that was made before mine. It had the rubber cover on the cable. It seems some assembly person decided to take a shortcut the day mine was put together. No biggie. I just ordered one from Daves and I'll replace it myself.

I'd probably spend more in gas and food if I took it to the dealership - although they happily were going to work with my schedule and do it while I wait.

Another confirmation that Meredith HD/Buell, New Hampshire, is an awesome dealership!

the cable is sufficiently cheep that one can keep a spare in stock. about 25 bucks.
