While on a ride with a group of cruisers, ( all metric ) we stopped for about 15 minutes, and nothing but clikkkkkkkk. I had this happen two weeks ago, and as a response to my post, I checked the battery connections, and conditions. No problem again until today. We ended up bump starting, but it died while idling. After second start, I said se ya and kept the r's up while I blasted straight to my friendly neighborhood HD shop ( Frederick HD/ Buell ). Got there, explained the situation, and of course, it started.. the mech took it in the shop, determined it was the voltage regulator. They put my batt on charge, replaced the part (took a while, but I am fine with that ) still under warranty, rode away a happy camper. The tech said he was surprised it even ran, when he checked the batt when I came in, it was 10.8 volts. He said he has seen them not run with 11.3 volts. I have a praise for the dealership, but I am putting that in another thread....lucky day! | ||

I don't know at what point the injectors stop firing, but the coils stop working around 9 volts, at least thats what I learned at shade tree mechanics, and farm equipment repair college. | ||

The XB's computer usually will stop when its not registering under 11 volts from the charging system to keep it from being damaged. Its possible that even though the battery was registering low voltage, the charging system was still pushing over 11, but not enough to actually refeed the battery. | ||

I agree with Wycked and Diablo, the computer will stop when it does not receive a good 11 volt signal and the coil will stop working with greater than 9 volts. It is a good thing that your battery had some charge left, from the sounds of it if you had to ride any longer you would have been left stranded. The voltage regulator was fried and you were basically running on a dying battery. Glad to hear Fredrick HD/Buell took care of you. (Message edited by gjmcmanus on June 29, 2005) |
