i raced an fz1 today. we both entered the toll booth at the same time and my intention was to blast out in front of this guy because I had been following him. we both rolled out at the same time and I opened it up. I got out in front of him but was quickly overtaken. It was impressive to see that bike blow by me still in 1st gear while I was in 3rd at about 90mph. I kept it wide open through all the gears but that guy was going so fast I quickly lost site if him. those liter inline 4s are crazy fast.

My buddy had a 2004 R1. That thing would do 105 mph in 1st gear, and 185 in 6th. Got up and went like nobodies business.

Yah those IL4s are real fast. And those RC51s don't hang around. Come to think of it those Aprilia RSVs are pretty good and those pesky Ducatis can really hammer out of the turns. But I still stayed with a 15-year old CBR1000F in a 50 mph roll-on last Saturday. Hell, that showed him (gulp).

The same friend that had the R1 now has an RC51. He has the typical K&N, Yosh pipes and a Power Commander on it, and it's no slouch. He let me ride it a few weeks ago, and I wasn't all that impressed. It vibrates like crazy right up through the bars (clip-ons)and in the seat even when cruising. Around town the bike feels pretty heavy, and it doesn't feel that fast, but when you look down you're flying. I think it's overly loud too, but he loves it.

My brother has a 2004 Honda 919 which the XB12 keeps within a bike length up to about 100, then he walks away like I was standing still. He just put a Power Commander in, so we'll see how it does against him now. But it sure is comfortable to ride, like a couch on wheels.

Get either of those bikes in the corners and I gain on them real fast though. I don't feel like I need to lean as much on the Buell as I do on either of those bikes.

Welcome to the real world

I can't believe you even tried ; )

You would feel even sillier when its one of those new 600 cc's. They weight less and deliver like 140hp.

Let me tell you about some past time humiliation....

I ONCE tried to outrun an R1 and, get this, on a sportster 1200S (I know, don't rub it in please). At a stoplight, I wacked the throttle, dropped the clutch and had the front wheel airborne. I layed on the tank, whacking through all the gears and all the time this guy was next to me, one hand on the handlebar the other on his knee, looking at me like WTF?!? I believe he was in third or so and did this roll-on wheelie and powered away shaking his head.

See, now you know why sportriders think Harley dudes are knuckleheads. I can't blame them!

Excuse: The Harley salesmen always told me that sporties would keep up with them! After all, they are called Sportsters, right?

Ingemar, too funny! You are a great story teller.

Your experience has been repeated 1000 times by other guys on Sportsters, trust me, I've been the other guy.

Had that experience on my first Buell. Got my 99 X1 few years back. (never rode a sportbike)
Test rode it at the dealer and thought, wow, this things got power. Was out cruising the Mississippi coast a few days later and came uppon a few 600s. Pulled next to them doing about 40, gave the nod, wacked the throttle. I was ahead of him for about 3/4 of a second, he flew by me on his back tire.

Derek (Ortega Kid) and I know a guy that works at Kawasaki named Dave who can really ride. Well, Dave borrowed a loan pool Vulcan and rode it up Ortega one morning. On the way back down he followed a GSXR rider, who is a decent rider, but sometimes believes that he is faster than Duhammel, he just needs the factory equipment. In fact, I've personally heard him say so.

Well, Dave stuffed him on the inside with the Vulcan's front wheel sliding to scrub off speed and proceeded to leave him behind in the twisties. Unfortunately for Mr. GSXR, there were witnesses.

I almost got passed by a bicycle on my old Honda a while back... It was about 1/2 way through the spars and admittedly I was just kind of cruising, but it was un-nerving just the same : ).

i scoped a new gsxr1000 today .. all black .. talk abt serious bike!!

a british rag called Fast Bikes, voted it unequivocally THE best sportbike bar none, not even close .. for as long as they can foresee! BIG rap!

2nd bike was kawi zx-6r (636cc) which smoked all but the gix ... also, for a 600cc it recorded a true 170mph!?!

i like my buell, but its a pocket bike! ; )

I guess because I rode Japanese bikes for 24 years before I got my first American bike, I never let myself be goaded into a one sided match-up.

I will, however, defend myself with wheelies...

A couple of months ago on my road, on a sunday early run, was blazing along, came upon a large group of ricers, went around all but one, was oing around him, as we entered the upper carousel, shiting into fifth on the rev limit, this dude looked over at me, stood up on the seat, and proceeded to wheelie into the distance!!! He stopped a little ways down the road to retreive all his friends, never did find out who he was, think it said valentino somethin on his leathers!

This past weekend I rode my '04 XB12R on a ride with some friends. This is the first ride that I have done on the XB in a while since getting my '05 R1. Well I got comments all day that they could tell that I was pushing it a lot. Every time I started off I kept hitting the rev limiter and they knew that I was going as fast as I could.

I love my Buell, but the R1 seems like it just keep going and going and going. Ya know what I mean. Anyway would not trade the Buell for anything as it is a very unique ride and I get a lot of good comments on it especially since putting on the full race fairing.

Its more impressive to ride them.
Hard for someone who hasnt ridden one to understand just how fast they actually are.

Who cares about out running someone????? Opps I guess I do, but what I love to see is the guys who ride on the street and think that they can ride and they never have been on back roads. Oh well to each his own.

What I have found about the speed thing is that it is a mind adjustment. When on the Buell fast seems to be around 125 to 130, but when I am on the R1 that seems like it is just idling. The Jap bikes are just crazy fast.

There is no replacement for a literbike. They are insane. I agree, that if you haven't ridden one, and I mean one built in the last five years, they would blow your mind.

I don't want that power anymore, but I wouldn't knock someone for wanting 150hp instead of my 80hp.

That is so true, that's what I likes about the 'bolt, you do not need to be traveling at terminal velocity to have fun! Ride a 05 gsxr1000 then try to be impressed with ANY bike, they are just friggin insane fast!

I'm convinced that 1-liter I-4's are just not any fun unless you're doing warp factor two.

I don't want that much power.

It is nice to see some familar names here - Ingemar and Phantom5oh. Its John from Buelltin Board, JRD on this one. Well I had a FZ1, and I belong to the above page fz1oa. With a k&n filter Jet kit and slipon it turned 126 rwhp. Very fast bike. It is also tall, long, and not nearly as fun and the power is not nearly as useable as the buell. It is also buzzy on the highway and well it is ment as a compromise between an R1 and a tourer. It does both O.K. but neither exceptionally well.

I had a couple of squids on R1's line up with me at a light in Marietta a few days back. I gave 'em some throttle twists and when the light turned green we all launched. They took off like a raped ape while I did a nice leisurely left turn. Doofus's. I'm not racing anything foreign anywhere straight.

As an ex-FZ1/ex-X1 owner, I gotta agree with JRD. The FZ1 is fast but boring, buzzy, and HOT. The BTU's coming off that durn radiator are downright dangerous to a Tucsonan.

Plus, I've realized I'd rather have a bike I can have fun taking a corner at 40 than one I'm bored on doing same corner at 90. (Witness my current w650 sidecar rig. That'll pucker yer sphincter at 25 when the chair lifts and swerves you into the incoming lanes... )
