Can anyone shed light on whether the early XB 1200s had a consistent problem with intake leaks ? And what, if any solution has been found ? This is the second time (under 4k mi) that my XB (sn 49) has developed an intake leak. My dealer service just wants to replace the seals again, even though the first time I emphasized that this is most likely a symptom, not the problem. The first leaks were discovered during the tps recal, after I installed the race kit, and the technician was unable to pinpoint exactly where the leak(s) were.

I recall that there were some stories of faulty throttle bodies or intake manifolds, and maybe even a service bulletin to that effect, but my dealer service insists there are no such bulletins. I have until October before I have to start paying for, and repairing this problem myself. My searches here have come up empty. Thanks.

I searched the archives and can't really find anything that talks about a service bulletin or recall about throttle bodies.

Also, I have never heard of such a problem, except for an occasional leak here and there, no more than a handful.

No recall or service bulletin.

There was a service bulletin for throttle cable clamps for older tube frame models, maybee this is what you are thinking of?

i have switched the intake manifolds MANY MANY times on the 98 sportster, having used five different manifold and carburetor combinations with two different stroke lengths. had four sets of barrels on: 3.000, 3.500, and 3.625 inch bore sizes. frequently switch back and forth between s&s G and E carb/manifold combinations. point is i have never had any problem getting effective manifold sealing. the xb has the same manifold gaskets as i used on various S&S stroker and stock harley manifolds, dont really see how one could get them installed wrong???

Thanks Fullpower, and i agree, it shouldn't be such a big deal. There is likely some scoring on a seal or gasket surface that no one is taking the time to diagnose specifically.

As it is now, i may have to pinpoint the leak and diagnose the cause myself if I can't convince the dealer to take the time, and i'll use some type of ht rtv sealer to compensate for the scratch, if that really is the cause, but that is a temporary solution at best.

I see some long term major trouble, like maybe cylinder removal to repair the gasket surfaces if this problem continues.

Maybe I should have titled this topic, "How do i convince dealer service do something they don't want to do"

Warranty:

5 yr

something like 18,000mi

on H-D (i would assume buell also)

intake / emissions systems

so all intake leaks are covered for 5 years OR

18,000 miles

like i said that is for harleys but i would bet

(without looking)it go's for buells too

some kinda emissions standards cr%p

lol
