I am too cheap to buy a service manual for my XB12R.

My primary chain is rattles under acceleration in a high gear. I need detailed instructions on how to adjust the chain tension. Someone please help me!

you can't adjust it....It is spring loaded. Make sure it is torqued down....Ya cheap bastard!

Uhm, its adjustable. There is a big bolt and nut below the primary cover loosing the nut, use a allen wrench clockwise to tighten. Of course there is the little cover you remove to check the tension.

The primary cover is the one on the left side where the shifter is, correct?

I have about 5000 miles on my bike. Is the primary chain developing "slack" or streching a little a normal characteristic of break in?

Yes its on the left, there will be 2 black inspection covers, you will use the small one with 2 bolts. Remove that you will see the chain you can use that to check tension also good to turn the engine over and check in more then one spot as there can be some spots tighter then other spots. On the bottom you can't miss it there is a very large nut and bolt. Loosen the nut that holds it in place , use allen wrench adjust untill you reach proper specs.

I forgot to mention, put the bike in 5th gear and remove plugs so you can rotate the engine. Take several measurements with the chain at different locations till you find where the chain is at its tightest then adjust it there.

And yes all Chains usually stretch the most initially. I tightened mine at 1k , and at 2k I checked again and it was still pretty close to spec. But it did tighten up just a little.

You don't need to pull the plugs, just hold a paper towel over the removed inspection cover and blip the starter a few times (with the bike in neutral of course).

Mine needed it's first significant change in adjustment (it is the second adjustment interval) at about 5k. No worries.

I like that method better! I always pulled the plugs on the Sporty but they're easier to get to.

yep, blip the starter works like a treat. I didn't worry about the paper towel as mine didn't puke any fluid. Just be sure to check it at multiple locations (6-10) so that the probability you've not overtightened.

The belt tensioner isn't spring loaded either : ).

I usually just grab a couple rear spokes and turn the engine over in fifth with the plugs in it...
