An update on my belt situation: Got jerked around
by the service manager for 3 days, fighting over whether he could warranty it or not. Then I got sick of his line of crap, I called buell customer service #, spoke with a woman named Kathy & explained everything to her. She authorized a warranty belt replacement and contacted my dealership and informed them that they WILL be taking care of it. Dropped it off today, hopefully I'll get it back before August!

Anyway I was wondering, How many miles can I go once the amber fuel light comes on? The most I've gone is 33 miles so far. How many miles can I go till it runs out?

All I can say is you do NOT have 3.7 usable gallons, more like 3.4 tops, so monitor your mileage and you will be able to estimate your limits ( yes, I found the bottom, it was no fun )

I have gotten 45, but I had to push it a few blocks up a hill, which stinks.

Actual capacity is about 3.4 gallons. The reserve is about .7 gallons.

50mpg x.7 gallons = 35 miles. Adjust accordingly to your mpg and riding style.

I did 33 miles on reserve and then had to wait for more to be brought to me on the side of the road.

Ditto on the 3.4 gallons. I always figure 25 miles max, because running out is no fun and the bike runs like crap for a while afterward if it happens.

I believe it, Dooley. Today I went for a ride with some cruiser types; scenic backroads at 45-55 mph; no racing, no stop-and-go. At 148.9 miles my fuel light still hadn't come on; I put 2.3 gallons in it and it was a little over the neck inside the tank (a little more than I usually put in). 64 mpg x .7 gal = 44 miles.

Bill

Usually get 52 mpg in everyday commuter riding.

Can you or should you go past the neck/lip inside the tank? Been wondering about this. Seems like you should be able to fill it past that point.

Any math whizzes here?
When my low fuell light came on I headed straight to a gas station. According to the fuell tripmeter, I traveled 14 miles to the station. When I filled her she took 2.99 gallons.

that they WILL be taking care of it.

Good for you! I hate lazy dealerships who look to take you for a ride instead of helping you ride.

Fuel light equation:
Fuel light = Gas station
No fuel = pushing bike
pushing bike = sucks

depends on how you're riding. I was on the road and went 49 mi on the light... Another time, I was flogging her, and ran out of gas at 29 mi. Pushed her about a 10th mi

This was probably due to the temp differences causing the light to come on sooner/later...

Just so you know... there are no gas stations until Merideth once you get past Alton Bay. LOL. I found that out the hard way. I only went 28 miles on reserve, but since that was the farthest I have ever gone with the light on, I was a little scared. Once I got down the hill in Weirs beach, I thought the Texaco there was open year round, but it wasn't. (BASTARDS!) Anyways, I got to Merideth HD and they said that there was a gas station right down the road, to which I replied... I HOPE SO! and there was. but 28 worrysome miles later, it all worked out.

Last Sept. @ Running the Ridge in Boone, NC our group of four riders pulled in for a fuel stop in the morning. I filled my XB9SL up to just a hair over the inner ring (1/8 to 3/16's) then cleared the pumps and waited for the others to fuel. After five minutes we were ready to pull out I smelled raw gas and a ride partner saw a puddle under my bike. The bike was upright not on the side stand. I now fill to the neck/lip while on the kickstand and the gas spillage has never happened again. Would I like to cram in an extra 1/2 gallon? You betcha but don't do it.

Yeah, I noticed when you fill it past the inner neck thing, whatever the hell that is, it comes out the bottom via an overflow hose. At $2.33/gal. I looked like one of those Mad Max characters, trying to get it up and into something before it evaporated.

Just an update: Got my bike back with a new belt(FREEBIE)! Service advisor at dealer didn't talk to me much, maybe he didn't like receiving that call from buell telling him to take care of me after he tried so hard to bend me over.

Also, on the way home I managed to get 40.8 miles with the fuel light on, didn't run out of fuel either. Just figured I'd better not push my luck. Took 3.312 gallons to fill it when I stopped.
