I turned on the bike at lunch yesterday, and the engine light started flashing. It will flash about a dozen times fast, then be off for a few seconds and flash again. It seems to run fine. I have a Jardine can on it, and am worried that if I have a dealer look at it that they will say that it is not covered under warranty due to the pipe. I plan on checking the error code tonight. Anyone have this experiance before?

Al's #1 rule of auto/motorcycle mechanics:

"All electrical problems are grounding problems until proven otherwise"

Al's #2 rule of auto/motorcycle mechanics:

"All problems are related to the last thing you were wrenching on the bike, even if it seems unrelated, until proven otherwise"

My light was flashing a bit after I'd changed out the seat rails on my XB-S. Turns out one of the ground screws that I'd had to remove and replace had vibrated loose. Could be that, check all your grounds.

Or not, could be nothing related to the above at all, but worth looking into.

Al

Thanks guys, I'll look into it. I put the pipe on about 1700 miles ago, but I will look into it. Thanks again

Al, you're so right.

In fact, #2 is the first thing I was taught when I started working on my own lil' 2-strokers.

Gearhead: check out that link to the post above. That procedure works; I did it myself that way. But be prepared to count fast!

The wiring harness for your ECM has crept up, and one wire on the bottom has a microscopic nick in the insulation that was cut by the sharp edge of the battery terminal. It grounds out when you sit on the seat, but not when you are off the bike testing.

Pull up the harness, identify the nick, slap a piece of electrical tape around that wire, get some split loom cable armor around the whole bundle, and cable tie it back down out of the way of the battery terminal.

Check fuses also I blew a fuse, don't remeber which one ,but I believe it was for brake light it caused the check engine light.
But if nothing else to know for sure they will have to pull codes at the buell dealer and see what it is.

Reepicheap,
Thanks a lot dude. You were spot on with that. The wiring harness that goes to the ECM had worn a hole into it from vibrating against the battery and was shorting out one wire. You Rock. Thanks again.

: )

I'm psychic.

surely it has nothing to do with the fact that I was sloppy with routing when I was messing with my ECM and caused the exact problem described and solved it with the exact solution described.

Gearhead I don't think you need to worry about Racine not helping you with warranty issue's as long as your bike is still under warranty. They are good people.

You are right. I like working with the guys at Racine H-D. Whenever I talk to them they are helpful. Hal's on the other hand is different story.
