my speed sensor went out yesterday, i checked the KV and it looks like "Updated (5 volt regulated) speedo sensor part number: 74402-95B (part revised 04/11/2004). Should be around $75." is the newest speed sensor. is this correct? was this ever a recall? i dont have a warranty. |

No recall unfortunately, it is cash out of pocket. Last we heard, that was the right part. If you can find a dealership with the old part, get it cheap and we can protect it with a $10 part from wal-mart and some minor soldering. Try pulling it and cleaning the magnet off first, and check the wiring attached to the sensor. Most were electically baked (a one way ticket) but some did fail due to broken wires or too much metal on the magnet. |

Dave can hook you up. Also, get the rewire kit so you wont blow out the new one. DAve can assist with this also. |

I got tired of riding around without a speedo(Tax Supported Militia Avoidance), went and bought one, got the old one out and noticed it was a broken wire. Put the new one in anyway. It was a tight fit for the wires anyway. I may be interested in a new one also. Got 15,000 miles on the new one. It may be time to get one ready to go. I wold be interested in rewire kit also. |

Chgojim, if you want an adventure, in lieu of hooking the thing up to the ECM via some heroic connector disassembly and routing harness, you can just slap a 5v regulator on the existing wiring. You can even do it all downstream of the connector for the sensor, so you can disconnect it and put everything back to stock. I have schematics here, but a better idea occured to me after spending countless hours building the stupid things from scratch... Go to walmart / target. Find the section with car cell phone adapters / chargers. Find any one that puts out 5 volts, and buy it. Look on the discontinued rack, you might get one for $5 or less. Cut it up, and splice it into the speedo sensor harness and seal it up best you can. Not |

mention was made about cleaning off the magnet. My speed sensor is fine...knock on wood...is it recommended that it be cleaned from time to time? Or is it one of those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of things? |

It would be harmless to clean it, but harmless to leave it dirty as well. |

hey there guys. i was riding with some of my buell friends the other day and my speedo went from 85 to 0. lol every now and again it will pop back up and read for a while and then fall back down. i cleaned the magnet and checked the wires and it still does it. could it be a bad speed sensor? if so dave could you get me a price on an 03' XB9S speed sensor? i think my local buell dealer which is like 1 hour away said $60.00. can you get a better deal on that? thanks. |

XB9lover, Dave is no longer in the parts business. Last I heard he was killing big animals in Africa. Seriously, he owns a bow-hunting shop now. Check out the sponsors section for current dealership contacts. My Speedo sensor just died in the last 50 miles of a 1300 mile ride. I seem to be replacing them about every 10K miles. If I could get a current part number for the voltage regulated "kit" just so I am certain I get the right one, I would appreciate it. |

J Davis, What's kinda gettin mr on the speed sensor issue is that I did that up and down (read-not read) for about 2000 miles and now all of a sudden it's been fine for the past 2500 miles. Not once has it dropped while riding and my gas mileage is actually accurate now lol. But now there is a new occuring problem. |

The new problem is that once in a while I'll turn my key on and my light won't come on but the dash will. Fuel injection won kick on and u can't start the bike. After a few turns of the key the headlight will click on and the bike starts fine once it's started everyhings fine. Intact it only does it when it hasn't been turned on in a while. Battery is less than a year old. Could it be the ignition switch? |

Sounds like a bad contact, either in the ignition or the kill switch. putting the kill switch to the "dead" position will turn off the headlight, leave the FI off, and keep the bike from starting. I would start with the Kill switch. As an update to the speedo sensor issue, I called the local Buell parts desk and was told that the "kit" is no longer available. So, either the speedo sensor was upgraded with an internal regulator, or there weren't enough purchases of the kit to keep it in production. Either way, a speedo sensor should cost about $60 from your local guy. |

Huh. Well, get the stock sensor, and get a cheapo cell phone car charger from a local big box store (5V through 10V should work fine) and start disecting and electrical-taping... I posted a schematic and parts list for Radio Shack as well... You can probably ditch the inductor, I think it is total overkill. |
