Anyone have a suggestion for a longer lasting tire than the stock Dunlap rear tire for 2004XB12R suitable for touring. The stock Dunlap was toast at 2800 miles with no burn outs or screeching halts.
Any one tried a CityX rear tire on a xb12R seems to have a little more tread pattern than the Donelaps }

I just put on Bridgestone Battleax tires on my 9R. They are a dual-compound tire. The center tread is a little harder than the shoulders. From what I'm told they will last longer than the duncraps...sorry, typo. I mean dunlops.
So far I like the performance. Because the center tread is harder they take a tad longer to warm up. Just a mile or so. No biggie. But I did have to take a click out of my rear compression dampening to compensate for the slightly harder ride.
Hope that's helpful.

Mark

I've put on an Avon ST 45/46. Take a look here: http://www.avonmotorcycle.com/us/en/Product.asp?ProdType=SportTouring&SubCat=13

They look pretty uncool ; )Nevertheless, the handling is okay and they offer enough grip for the average driver.

I've put about 1k miles now on them, and couldn't tell how long they will last.

Regards,
Gunter

Had the Bridgestone BT54R's on, gave nice enough mileage, about 10000km, now running a pair of Pirelli Evo Strada's, very impressed, think might give a bit less mileage

Well, I myself can attest to the Pirelli Scorps on my XB9SX. Lasted a good 8000 miles. I just put a new Scorp rear on. I'll be replacing them again for my trip with fresh tires. I'll give a writeup on how they hold up on a 1300 miles trip to Wisconsin and then to the Gap and back to Florida. Total miles should be around 3K or more.

I went through 2 stock tires (2400 miles ea.)before I realized my budget(wife) wasn't going to handle that pace of wear. About 1500 miles ago i went with the dunlop d220. seems to be holding up much better. I'll be keeping an eye on this topic though as I'm looking for a rear tire made of stone. I'm a racing commuter, not a commuting racer. gl

XB9rski is running the D220's and has foudn them to last HIM for quite awhile. I am thinking of trying them. Currently I have Shinko 009 Raven's on my 12, and after 2000 miles of commuting, (prior to the wreck) the rear is barely showing any sign of squaring up. Before anyone goes off on the "unknown" brand of tire, I knew of the Shinkos from Japan. There they are a Spec race tire for certain classes and are highly praised by street riders there. I learned of them when I lived in Hawaii cause several of the riders I knew were "importing" the Intermediate tires. Right now the only supplier I am aware of here in the US is www.azmotorsports.com and since they are a relatively unknown brand here in the US they are priced on the low side, $164 shipped for a front and rear. WRT the 009 Raven's, they are a cold blooded tire, which I figure will be fine with the heat of the summer. It does take them a bit to warm up but they do give plenty of warning before they slide. Once they are warm, they hold almost as good as the Diablo's I so love. The 006 Podiums are a softer compound that warms up very quick and are definatley comparable to the Diablo's.

Now, with all of that being said, I know of a few people who have the Pilot Power's from Michelin. Hard canyon riders that also run them for track days. One rider on a CBR has 5000 miles on his that includes 3 trackdays. The other is a coworker who has them on his R6, daily commuter with 3 trackday weekends as well, he is up around 4000 miles on his. They are in good enoough condition I am pondering the expense and ordering a set.

My 12R tire history

OE tires 2100 miles
Michelin Pilot Powers 3300 miles. Great tire...ran them over the winter here in the midwest. Warm up very quick and lots of grip.

Michelin Pilot Roads 5600 miles and still in bike. I'm expecting around 6500 miles and the rear will need to be changed. Great tire, needs a little time to warm up compared to the Pilot Power and still lots of grip I will replace them with the same tires.

Just got Michelin Pilot Roads, too. Having them installed at the 5000 mile service, or there 'bouts.

Factory 207's on my 03 XB9S were ready to retire at 2400mi. Might have gone another 500.

Wanted / needed something that wouldn't flat spot on the hi-way runs and still stick in the corners.

Debated between the Michelin Pilot Roads and Metzeler Roadtec Z6. Went with the Roadtec Z6. (same carcass as Pirelli)

500mi in and I'm very pleased.

I've been pleased with the handling, wear time and wear pattern of the Michelin Pilot Roads on my Beemer.

I changed to Metzler Sportec M1 on my XB9R and am very happy with them. I think I have almost 4000 miles and a track day, (few burnouts) and they still look good. Plus in the rain they are good too. I give them a thumbs up.

I run the Avon ST 45/46 on my Buell and Yamaha GTS1000 and have just changed the rear tire on the Buell which had a little over 7,500 miles on the old Avon tire. I get better mileage on the GTS with the same tire but I imagine the extra torque of the Buell wears the tire down a little faster.
