Bear with me - I'm pretty ignorant about HD motors...

The clutch is wet so does it reside in the same oil as the transmission?

How different are the 9 and 12 motors from their HD XL source motors? They must use the same jugs but do they also use the same heads? Cams? Pistons? Rods? I read where the tranny gears are closer spaced than the XL tranny - does this mean the use of unique gears in the Buells?

I'm sure this has been discussed before so point me to those threads if you like...

The oil can be the same stuff (20w50 full synthetic), but are different isolated systems. At least until your crank seal goes ; )

The XL and XB motors are pretty close in terms of overall layout, but last I heard actually have quite a few internal differences. Much more then you would expect.

Bill, read his question again.

"The clutch is wet so does it reside in the same oil as the transmission? "

I think the correct answer is yes.

Doh! My bad. Tranny and clutch in same place with same oil, engine oil is different. Sorry, should have read closer...

There are only a couple interchangeable parts between the sporty engine and the Buell engine as I recall. I think that none of the drivetrain or rotating assembly is the same. I think that goes for the valve train as well. The cases and all that are different.

It used to be that the Buell engine was based off of the XL, now the XL is based off of the Buell engine : ).
