"... that are only read by nuts like us."
Change nuts to enthusiasts(spelt correctly of course) and I won't argue with anon.
Bottom line is that we'll know in 17 days or so.

I just received an email from my local dealer (TSI HD/Buell) stating that the Slay the Dragon event is still on for 4/27.

so, we should still have a model in the dealers for the event, though production models may be back ordered.

However, the new iMac should show that an innovative enough product will instill enthusiasm even if the supply is not there immediately.

ATT: Blake and all the BUELLERS in BUELLDUM
Was by my BUELL DEALER today and said something
about the FRIEBOLT(ie:2BLAST) not makeing the
27 APRIL SHOW DATE. Since the V-ROD was not out
when it was supposed to he called BMC. Was told
they would not be out in April and where did he get this INFO. All they said was they would not
be out in APRIL and would not say anything else.

On the topic of when Buell promised the Firebolt,

I found this: (not trying to be negative, just adding this for the record)

Firebolt Release Date, FUELL, July/August 2001

Personally I dont care if it does take them a little longer to get it out in the market. I'm not going to buy a first year model anyways. Give them a year or 3 to work the bugs out, & yes you all know it will have bugs. Thats not negative, its simply being a realist.

I was just trying to point out that the bike would not have gotten this far if it was not able to pass emissions standards.

What I heard at the Bike show in Philadelphia this year was something along the lines of:

"just because a bike will pass emmissions tests in the winter does not mean it will pass the same tests in the spring"

This is what I was told, I don't know if this is still the cause for the hangup.

Throw this into the rumor mill. Where did they put that silly CA required carbon canister? The XB is already a tight package.

Greg

Looking forward to the 4/27 preveiw.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone heard that his buddy took his X1 for inspection and couldn't pass emissions. That became translated to "Buell can't pass emissions" and eventually evolved to some nonsense about a truck being stopped at the border by C.A.R.B.

You don't live in California, do you. Motorcycles aren't treated the same way as cars and are not subject to the bianual inspections the cars are. In other words, it's not possible for a used X1 to fail a Smog check becuase it never goes through one. In fact, almost all of the new ones don't go through a SMOG check either. Once a model is certified by C.A.R.B., that's it. This may change as soon as 2004, but that's hte future.

Vik,

When I lived in CA I thought that was kinda weird, not that I would ever complain about it. Here in AZ the two counties that require smog checks require them on bikes too.

Blastin,

Just because the Blast motor was certified in California, doesn't mean that the Firebolt motor is.

The Blast was probably certified before the rules changed anyway. It used to be 700cc and above, and now it is 280cc and above for that class of certification.

When a California Buell dealer said that 235 Firebolts were impounded in California for not passing smog certification, I had no reason to believe that they were lying. It was a credible number and a valid reason.

Now, having said that, California represents 10% of Buells dealers in the U.S. 43 dealers out of 450. These dealers probably sell 20% of the bikes in the country.

My guess is that Buell will hold up shipments to everyone until this problem is fixed, which shouldn't take too long, or the California dealers will go through the roof.

The problem is people who read Car & Driver and Road and Track that saw the ads and are going to be showing up at dealerships on April 27th expecting to see something.

I think Buell should get at least one bike out to every dealer they can, regardless of the problem, and get bikes to California as soon as possible.

There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that any production Firebolt has been shipped to any location outside of East Troy, Wi.

Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed.

California Air Research Board has nothing to do with the change in delivery schedule.

Launch when ready.

Anonymous,

If you would care to reveal yourself to someone via email - you might be believed.

Just tell me where you get your information, and I'll tell you where I got mine.

You could be as right as I am or I could be as wrong as you are. Who knows?

The name of the organization is California Air Resources Board not RESEARCH - www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm

Do your homework.

And I guess the Firebolt that I rode in Califonia was just in my imagination.

I am one anonymous poster, but there are others. I am the one who posted yesterday and said: "I haven't heard anything about this rumor. I suspect there is little or no truth to it."

This comment is based on conversations with employees at BMC on (somewhat) unrelated matters. I can not reveal my identity without getting those particular individuals in trouble. Things seem to be going very smoothly.

The poster who said "There is absolutely no truth to the rumor . . ." probably works for Buell.

The whole concept is ludicrous. While I am not directly involved in C.A.R.B. I am sure that the testing and paperwork is completed long before shipment. There aren't C.A.R.B. Rangers patrolling the borders and pulling over trucks for inspections.

A conversation imagined and not overheard at a California produce border inspection station.
Guard in shack: "Got any fruits or vegetables or other plant life aboard?"
Tired truck driver: "Nope."
Guard in shack: "What-cha haulin'?" as he looks at the non-descript trailer apart from the Harley-Davidson logo on the side.
Tired truck driver: "Bikes and stuff".
Guard in shack: "New models?"
Tired truck driver: "Yep".
Guard in shack: "What kinds?"
Tired truck driver:"Buells".
Guard in shack: "You mean those little one-lung Blasts?"
Tired truck driver:"Nope".
Guard in shack:"Oh, then some of the new X1s, M2s, and S3Ts I was looking at last week".
Tired truck driver: "Nope".
Guard in shack: "Hmmm, just a second" he says as he reaches down and opens up a CycleWorld from below his counter shelf.
Tired truck driver: looks down out of the corner of his left eye and mumbles "sheeeeeeeeeeeet".
Guard in shack: "Park in over there fella and get out your bill of lading, be right with ya".
Tired truck driver: pulls over to the right, gets out his paper work, grabs the cell phone, and get MI on the phone "they caught me at the border, let loose the hounds".
And somewhere in Sacramento a telephone begins to ring.
(to be continued...)

Thanks José. Maybe they could use some of that area under the tailsection to stow a basic tool kit for the 49 state model???

Ignoring it mostly, but does that make it a production bike?

The anonymous poster is correct. C.A.R.B. has NOTHING to do with timing of the XB9R delivery. Buell is simply sticking to their guns. In my opinion y'all naysayers are WAY out of line getting all whiny and spiteful on this issue. What we should be saying is... "Good job Buell! I wish you had done the same thing on the other models. Way to go for learning from your experience."

Sorry Jim, like Court said a "production" bike has yet to leave the factory. What you rode and saw were not production bikes. They were "pre-production" demonstration and display bikes.

Oh, that was Willie G. and he was attending the dealer show last July. :)

I think the main reason for all the bitching is both Harley & Buell announced new bikes at the same time last year. The V-rod is already in peoples garages, yet the Firebolt has yet to be released. I think Buell jumped the gun & should have held off a few more months before announcing this bike. Everyone saw it & wanted it right now, some even held off on buying another bike because they wanted a Firebolt. Riding season is here & still no bike & no official word from the factory on when it will be here.

Blake:

You. . . Texican though you may be. . . are smack dab on the money.

I'm a tad bit distressed that when Erik Buell does EXACTLY what I want him to do, half the free world wets themselves and tolls the Buell death noll.

I said the other day that I am excited and I am.

I am not to create a smokescreen of optimism.

The educated and devoted folks at Buell did not drink a potion and loose all that education and experience. These are very smart, very passionate people. They are good people.

I do not know the details.

I know alot about Buell.

My bet is that there is a pissin' match like none few of us have ever seen with a boy in a green shirt standing in the East door saying.."They ship when I say they ship". Homage to corporate fun rides be damned. Frankly, it's the Buell way.

And....unless I miss my guess....I know who's doing the long term durability testing and I know their standards. Things that you and I would never notice nor would rise to our personal threshold of concern will be percieved as utter failure and be remanded to engineering to tweak.

Several of these folks are anal enough to make Aaron look sloppy. (Aaron: Bite your tounge....that's a compliment! :))

That's my opinion and remember I, myownself, declared that I have (and will ask for no) specifics.

I shall continue to be excited and cheer MY TEAM.

Don't consider this "Official", but based on bits and pieces of things I've heard and seen, I still expect bikes in showrooms on or around the 27th. I think Buell has downplayed this to the dealers, because they don't want them to be upset if they don't make it quite on time.

Again, this isn't official, and we'll still have to wait and see, but I don't think people should be concerned that this might drag on for months and months. They'll arrive before we're too old to enjoy them!

By saying "too old to enjoy them", I mean being so old we'd consider buying an S3T (just kidding José).
