Has anyone on the board blown an engine? What mileage are we looking at for a rebuild? I've heard 15 to 20k, anyone care to confirm/deny that?

Ski blew his in that ballpark, but he's the only one I remember. I'm at 14K now. Crossing fingers... I wouldn't complain though. Best 14K of my life!

I know it sounds like I am nagging on Ski when this comes up, and I am not, I just want to correct the record that Ski's engine did have a problem, but did not blow until he was given bad advice from a dealer, who later stepped up to the plate and took responsibility for making things right.

There are lessons to be learned from that experience, but they have much more to do with Ski handling the situation right, and the dealer and factory stepping up and showing great support, then they do with the longevity of an XB engine.

9300 still ticking. Sadly I won't be able to hit 10K this weekend like I planned. Only because of the $@^#$@&@%*& rain we're getting. It's rained since Tues!!!!

24k and the engine is still running strong,the tranny is another story,and I believe that to be a dealer problem.

17,000 miles and no signs of excessive wear. If it aint broke dont fix it. Glitch has over 30k on his 03 9s so not to worry.

Running better than ever at ~16k here. My Cyclone was running excellent at 17k miles when I sold it. From what I have seen 15k-20k would be extraordinarily low mileage for major failure on an XB motor. It's true we saw Ski's motor fail somewhere before 30k, but if I remember correctly there was some issue with a crack in the oil pump prior to the engine failing.

You guys scare me. My S3T has 6K on it and I expect it to run for at least 75K . My twin cam has over 80K and still runs strong. Is 75K an unreasonable expectation for me S3T? I don't race, it is used for short touring trips.

Daddyhogx, no, I would expect it to go longer. Hell, my pickup (Ford Ranger 2.3L 4 banger) had 147,000 on it and still runs strong, and that is IMO not the best engine Ford produced, under engineered if you ask me.

Is it 1313 who has the 100K mile S-2?
If an S-2 can make it to 100K, a properly maintained XB outta make it above & beyond 50K easily. I'd say higher but I believe in hoping for the best & preparing for the worse. It is my guess that 50K is a worse case scenario.

I lost my engine at 15,500 last fall. Somehow the engine did not get oil (the tech thought that maybe an oil line was pinched) and the engine was completely tore up inside. It was replaced under extended warranty. The complete engine for the '03 is obsolete, so they had to build it piece by piece at the shop. It runs great and haven't had a problem with the new engine in 3000 miles. I think that I just had some bad luck and don't think that it is indicative of xb reliability though.

What the hell? A measly 14k and engines are blowing up? That sucks. My first gixxer which was an 86'gixxer 750 had 48k miles when I sold her and she was as fast as a freaking jet fighter plane. I don't know man this is wigging me out

Redtail69 your gixxer had no problem but I know a guy that had a 97 gixxer 750 and need the engine to be rebuilt after only 3000KM so just a bit over 1500 mi. It doesn't mean gixxer are not reliable and it's the same thing for Buell's each brand can have problem on cpls bikes.

Redtail, let me tell you about my 1993 FZR that nearly caught fire because of a voltage regulator that was a pos. Oh, let's not forget the replacement one that burned up also.

I use this as an example of how any bike can have problems.

With proper maintenance and not too crazy riding habits, I would expect the engine to last up to and over 100,000 miles... 20,000 on a 98S1W and 2500 on a 97 S1 with no motor probs... and 90,000+ on a 90 springer with only a bad lifter (which required a new cam and oil pump rebuild. Oh and new fully adjustable push rods for good measure).

Guys, rode with 1313 to Cincy last weekend. The next day he continued to Homecoming breaking 100K on his S-2.

My M2 is a relative newbie, but it turned 36K on the trip home, and the motor still runs great. As a matter of fact, Brankin (1313) and Dave (Aydenxb9) commented a couple weekends ago on how smooth and quiet the top end of this 74ci HD motor is. Like any machine, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last.

Amen. to that, M2nc!

S3 with 17K+, XB (too low to matter)... all of my Harleys with over 30K miles... no major problems. A gasket here and there. No big. I also ride Nortons, which should tell ya something... I keep my bikes clean and tech checked before every ride. Maintenance maintained at all times. Hobby or obsession... your choice.

I read somewere the expected life of a 2004 XB motor was 100,000 miles it might have been Fuell magazine.

Looks like my '02 S3T and I are getting off to a bad start. After less than 6,000 miles I have replaced the battery, tires, rocker box gaskets, ECM and complete exhaust system (twice). My '99 Road King has 80,000 on it and no problems other than two stators and regular maintance. Gives me cause to question the reliability of the Buell

The complete engine for the '03 is obsolete, so they had to build it piece by piece at the shop.

That is innacurate, an '03 XB9 has the same engine parts as an '04, and most of an '05(not certain if there is a cam change to go along with the EFI change). The different pulley for the '04 belt can be swapped out for the original pulley from the '03.

Well, even though there was an '04 or '05 engine that they could have purchased, the extended warranty company refused to put anything in other than the parts that were for the '03. If this inaccurate, then I am sorry. It was a real fiasco to get the warranty company to okay the new engine in the first place. I'm happy with the engine so I don't really care if they built an engine or bought one.

Since Sept, 2004, got 32,000 on the old XB 9. Speedo sensor, belt and 4 sets of tires. (2nd set of Diablo Corsa's that I have gotten 10,000 miles on) Still grinning!
