My pipe broke! Damn! I AM NOT BLAMING FORCE! There is no evidence to suggest that this anything other than an act of god. Ane even though the pipe cracked, I still love it! I will fix it and be very happy still.

look closely, you are looking at the rear header and o2 sensor

header cracked in half just north of the o2 sensor!

Bike started running like crap after a fillup yesterday. bucking, skipping, chugging when below 4500 rpm. 4500-4700 rpm ran ok, above 4700 rpm felt like the rev limiter had kicked in and that the bike was shutting down. I thought it might be bad gas or my power commander but now I know what it was....

Looks like I need to get this welded or put the stock exhaust back on. Danm I am pissed.

wtf is up with these force pipes? They're so good and yet some are cracking? Sigh... The freaking muffler is attached to the engine. There should be no stress on these things.

What did you torque the nuts to? It doesn't "seem" that it would matter in this case... I'm just curious. This is indeed the first time I've heard of that happening...

torque the o2 40 ft-lbs
torque the nuts 75 in-lbs

I went and welded it. no laughing; i am not a welder...

I am going to hit again just to be safe and then paint it with the 1200 degree cermic paint.

I don't know why this pipe cracked. Let be clear that I am NOT BLAMING FORCE. I have no evidence that what happened here is anything other than an act of god.

It doesn't sound like you know where the crack started at, but if it started at the nut for the O2 sensor, then the nut being welded on there is creating a "hard point" in the structure. With the heat cycles and vibration the pipes through the material right next to the heavier section caused by the nut is not able to move and flex like the rest of the pipe. Thus the hard point. The aerospace industry learned this a long time ago. I would bet money that it will break again right next to the weld around the nut.

It needs something like this

You are a better man than me John. If I paid that much for a pipe and it cracked like that, I WOULD blame them.

That looks to me like thermal fatigue - It will happen again unfortunately. These pipes should be made of inconel to better stand up against this type of failure given this design.

I can't come here an openly lay blame... I can say I don't like what happened and I hoped that they would replace the piece since it's only a 12" section of the whole system. I spoke with them today and I was informed that it was probably caused by my nuts coming loose from the studs. I checked them before I realized the pipe was broken and they were tight. You can draw your own conclusions as to what caused the failure.

I do love the way the pipe sounds/looks/performs so I will definately keep it. I would like to see the ti-force dynos though.

Wow, that's an impressive failure! I would have liked to see the actual pipe. I agree that a fully welded reinforcement patch around the bung would be a very good idea.

my weld twisted the pipe too much and it touches the head. I'll have to buy a replacement piece...

Ahhh crap. I don't think it would have held together much longer anyways. (even after your fantastic welding) Maybe it's a blessing in disguise since you don't have to tear down your bike AGAIN...

Kevin & I were just discussing this very issue today on the design of the new Drummer SS. If all the mounting points on the header and muffler don't line up perfectly when they are tightened up you can put a hell of a load on the components. We were specifically concerned about the header flange studs and not the pipe itself. In retrospect, drilling a hole in the pipe and welding a bung to it can create a stress riser that makes that area the weakest link in the system.

i ordered the piece that connects to the rear cylinder for $150! they will pay for 1/2 of the overnight shipping.

they said to use 10 ft-lbs of torque on the nuts and use lock washers or lock tabs to prevent it moving and breaking again. they say i am the first to break this pipe.
