First off, thanks for serving. I spent 6 years in the USN, but nothing like what you guys/gals are going through over there. God bless you.

"Question 1: The bike I bought is a 2006 Lightning XB12S."

Congrats! You're gonna love it.

"Question 2: I guess what I want to know is if I'm at a light and a CBR 600 or 1000 pulls up next to me and the light goes green and we go for it what's gonna happen?"

You'll think you hit the kill switch when the light turns green. The current generation of 600 supersports (with professional riders aboard) can tear off low 10's all day. Infact, Ricky Gadsen got a production '05 R6 into the 9's with minor gearing and by cinching up the suspension.

"another thing if the I-4 is the ideal sportbike motor why does Ducati use V-Twins in their bikes?"

The same reason you never see a Ducati/Aprilia on the podium at a MotoGP or Superbike (open class) event.

"Question 3: What, in the hands of a capable rider, does a XB12 do in the 1/4 mile?"

Again, if you're a pro drag racer on an XB12 and you line up next to a stock C5 Z06 all you're gonna see is tail light and exhaust. That '04 Cobra you were looking at will embarrass you also.

"Question 4: What is the best route in increasing the power of a Buell?"

exhaust, air filter, ecm

The Buell is not made, nor does it pretend to be a drag racer. In capable hands it will give the pimply-faced kid down the street fits on his Gixxer on a twisty stretch of road.

I have a garage full of late model motorcycles. I'm relatively new to Buelldom, but enjoy it thus far.

Have fun and keep your head down over there!

Army, There was a lot of information thrown at you, and I agree with most of it. I went to Speedworld (drag strip in Surprise) on a bike night not to long ago and saw some very fast Buells. M1 giving you a tour of Spars near Prescott, the cool ride to Yarnell. Although I haven't been to Tortilla Flats or the Globe area. I am hearing a lot of good stuff about those places.
I was at a local dealer who had a bunch of Buells discounted to really low prices, you could save a lot.
Dave S. can save you a bunch on bike gear and hook you up and give you a tour. very cool.

You hear a lot about service from dealers here. I have found an independent Harley guy who builds custom engines, mostly dragster engines. He has tuned my bike (XB9) and I was more than satisfied.

I have to comment on your reference to the K1200 BMW. Those things will really surprise you, very fast and handle really well. Unfortunetley very tall. even with the low seat I had problems with the seat height.

Remember, you are are not an Army of one! We are all behind you. I will go out on a limb and say all of the Buellers here are proud of all you guys who risk it all, either here or overseas.

AIRBORNE!

Armybueller, I bought my Buell in Ansbach Germany. The out the door price is the total price I paid with all the extra stuff (shipping, set up etc...) Talk to your AAFES rep over there and he should be able to tell you what is available. At the time I bought mine there were only 2 Buells available in Germany. But there were more available for stateside delivery. If you are willing to take a left over model you can get pretty good deals.Where are you at in Iraq? Im in the 1st Infantry Division I was at FOB Speicher and FOB Danger.

Hey Army,
When you rotate back to the world go to a Buell dealer... much better deal then AAFES. I bought my XB9R when I returned from a stateside dealer.
I followed the Buell website the whole time I was in Mosul, could have bought a '04 but waited for the '05.

Keep your head down and thanks for serving!

Army,
I just bought a XB9SX. It is my first Buell & I am loving it. I don't have it past the break in yet so I haven't gotten to play with it's full potential. I was at LSA Anaconda until Oct last year. My leg got in the way of a bullet. I traded in a CBR1000 for this bike. I have followed Buell's for years but never thought about getting one.

As others have told you already they are not the fastest rides. But how often are you going to be going 100+? I have had a few bikes before I got this one. I can't say much about best price as I am dealing with what is left of my credit thanks to my ex-wife. I paid MSRP for mine. After having it for 3 weeks the biggest & best part is that you only see someone else riding one about once a week.

Keep your head down and where ever you buy your bike from I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Sgt,

I bought my first XB from AAFES in OKI and would have fared better taking up a deal from the likes of Daves. I'd do that! He's great.

As far as leaving it stock except the pipe for sound. I say learn on it totally stock. I did. You need to learn the bike. I'll never forget when I got my pipe, and you won't either... All the ricers stopped with me to say WOW. They couldn't believe how good it sounded as I came around on the inside... "That's the side that points the exhaust at them on our favorite turn!"

Hold the line! See you when you get back out here to AZ. I'll getcha a beer...

Im at FOB Ramadi and Combat outpost mostly..so you[wildman] took one huh? yeah they started on this whole sniper thing lately..guess they got tired of blowin us up with IEDs. I tell you this I'll never take not being shot at for granted again..lol.

Anyways, yeah I like the Idea of going to Wisconsin and pickin up a new one from Daves better. So if I can go that route I will, besides it will give me someplace to go on leave.

Hi SGT I'm an ex muscle car fanatic as well. I have owned an '88 GT, a '91 LX, a '96 GT and until last August a '67 Fastback with a 302 roller block.

The car hobby is comprised of this, pour tons of money into the car, polish all day, drive to the nearest burger joint, pop the hood and answer dumb questions from teenagers who think a fast car is a Civic with a 5" tailpipe. The first day I had my Buell home, we went for a 100 mile ride through the country side. Motorcycles are built to be riden! You will enjoy it.

Give em hell but come home safe!

Army,

I'm a pretty new rider and got my 12R through AAFES in Korea with a nice rebate on an 04 back in DEC, but it seems you could do well going through some of the POCs here.

I ride my bike - stock right now - almost everyday and love the hell out of it - 2 90 degree 15 mph posted turns on the way to work at Rucker and I can take them at 50 without trying hard at all, unless the MPs are out of course. And I've only got a couple of months and about 1900 miles of experience so far.

I found some numbers on an '03 12S in Motorcyclist magazine - now these guys are pretty damn good riders I imagine but here goes.

1/4 mile = 11.38s @117.6 mph
top gear roll ons - 60 -80 mph = 3.85s
measured hp = 92.2 @6750 rpm
measured tq = 71.9 @ 5750 rpm

I know you'll enjoy your buell, I had one WO come over and talk to me and fiddle with my bike one day since he was considering and within a week he had one of his own.

Stay safe over there - hopefully you'll be back safe and sound before I get over there, if not, I'll be overhead doing my damnedest to help you out.

Scouts Out!

new problem, apparently there are two new bikes coming out..geared toward larger riders supposedly, which I am (6' 200lbs) .when I watched the Buell videos the guy looked almost to big for the bike. anyone out there my size riding a Lightning, what do you think? Info on the new bikes sooner would be cool so I can still have time to cancel my AAFES order and re-order one of the new bikes if I want.

If I had the time and were in your position, I would cancel and wait. Another month "supposed to be new model" release. If nothing comes out that fits your need or liking, then when you get state side, call up Daves, sure he could fix you up with something.
As far as the ride & performance issue, I have had 8 bikes in my life, the XB is by far the most enjoyable to ride. Once you get into how well the bike handles, kicking some I4's arse doesn't really appeal anymore. "Yea buddy you got the 1000Hp, 600MPH, rocket on wheels, but where the hell you gonna experience all that payment at?", for 10-12 seconds on the drag strip? You'll be able to enjoy the Buell no matter what you are doing( unless of course you are at the track sittng next to that 1000HP rolling insurance note.
Have you checked on the difference in insurance cost? Just a thought.

If you're tall, don't forget to try the S pegs on the "R" model. Worked great for me!
