Are the turn signals in the stock holes? If so, this is the easiest chop I've seen yet. I'll have to do it now. | ||

yes, this is an easy chop. the signals are still in the stock holes and i didn't paint anything (if you cut a clean line and sand it, you can hardly tell a difference between the bare aluminum and the paint). to do this, i simply disconnected the signals and brake light and backed the wires out so they wouldn't be in the way. leaving the grater bolted to the bike, i marked my lines with a marker and covered the rest of the bike with a blanket. using a grinder i made my cuts, including a cut inside for the light to shine down from the brake light onto the license plate. then i sanded everything real nice like and put the wires back on. i had to make a bracket for the license plate. that was real simple, i just bent a piece of aluminum into a c shape that goes behind the plate and bends forward to mount over the same bolt that holds the turn signal. i've been contemplating how to do this for months and what sold me on this design was the way that license plate is framed by the remnants of the grater. it really looks good from all angles. | ||

the seat is stock. it's silly to say, but the seat was one of the deciding factors that made me go with the xb12s... this seat is firmer and a lot more sculpted than the seat on the cityx.... plus, of course, i liked the 1200cc. | ||

Not to bad Ted!!! Cool looking!!! You may want to put the license plate at an angle to allow for some clearance. If you compress your shock to much it will catch the plate. Also doing wheelies may make the plate rub the tire in its current configuration. (Message edited by hanses25 on May 31, 2005) | ||

looks real nice ted. ridden in the rain yet? Like the cheese grater is so effective? I'm still trying to figure out how to keep from getting a wet @$$ every time I run through water. I really like the look of this mod, but I'm interested more in keeping my butt dry. I'll take suggestions. | ||

I dont think that plate flip is legal in PA I was thinking about putting a piece of clear plastic under the grater to see if that helps Ted that looks great. One of the things I really like is the retention of the stock lights in their stock location. I am of the mindset that it is important to have the lights out at that width to emphasize to the cagers which way you are turning. When they are barely wider than the brake light, I think that introduces a visibility issue. | ||

Elff - I agree. I wanted to maintain the stock light configuration. Fullpower - I have not ridden in the rain yet. But when I do, I won't mind it all - I wear an Aerostich. Hanses25 - Good point. The aluminum bracket that I made for the plate is sort of flimsy anyway... I think I'd like to make a better one and adjust the bends so that the plate is at more of an angle. | ||

Looks AWESOME ill have to take a pic of mine not finished yet but as of 3 days ago it looks alot the same (Great minds think alike) need to do final sanding and paint but the same basic idea took me about 45 min so far (did it at lunch the other day) the bonis is i have most of the tools i need i also have axcess to a machinest (sp??.. im a mechanic not a teacher LOL) mabey powdercoat when done ?? dont know izzinya  (Message edited by izzinya on June 01, 2005) | ||

Builtbyted- I really like that chop job. I often considered chopping mine but didn't care for the stubby look it gave to the rear end. I think your chop suits me much better. Just the hint of a tail section and the stock lights make a nice look. I plan on doing the same very soon. Thanks for the blueprint to work from. | ||

Hey Odie, SuP?? When ya did ur mods to the Grater ,did ya have to paint the whole unit or touch up areas, Etc.. Oh what did you use by the way to slice off the unwanted, And all can answer how they cut theirs off as well Thanks in Advance..!! | ||

Hogs, I repainted the whole thing after I was done. If you notice, the support rails, tail section, and headlight modules are all the same color now. I use a combo of a chop saw, air cut-off tool and a Dremel with a rotary cutting bit for the general shaping and then I use sanding drums on the Dremel and then hand sand from there. Fill in the imperfections with spot putty if painting or metal if it is going to be powdered. Odie | ||

B_S, wife just had major surgery last Monday, Mom-In-Law's in town, and the kids are out of school for the summer so needless to say I have been extremely busy. Wife is just starting to get around on her own so things are getting easier. Never enough time to do it all it seems.........Odie | ||

Hogs: I did all my cutting with a DeWalt grinder and a metal cutting wheel. After grinding, I smoothed things out with a sanding drum attached to a drill and a handheld metal file for the flat sections. To polish it off, I used sand paper by hand. As per my earlier post, I didn't repaint anything. Blackxb9: Thanks. I agree. I owe a lot to Odie for inspiration. I downloaded his pic months ago and put it in my pictures file. I knew I wanted to head in that direction, but something wasn't quite right. In my opinion, either solution looks better than the grater - so look at mine, look at Odie's and go with what works best for you. | ||

 Don't mind the little piece of blue painters tape. Forgot to remove before picture. Used it to cover a hole then fill with black silicon. It's where the wire came out to the old turn signals, but then I replaced them with flush mounts. | ||

rocketsprink - that is gorgeous. i considered doing the same with the turn signals, but your is the first bike that i've actually seen this mod performed on. ultimately, i opted not to put my turn signals there because i thought it would be unsafe (a good buddy of mine was rear-ended by a car). nonetheless, your bike looks great. well done! | ||

rocketsprink - your profile says you integrated the turn signals into LEDs on the license plate bracket? does that mean your turn is signaled under the seat and on the license plate? please show more pics... i wouldn't mind seeing a side view of your whole bike either. TEd | ||

I had LED's also in the top corners of the CF license bracket, but when I painted the tail section and removed them, then went to reinstall them, one of the 4 didn't work anymore. I still plan on getting new ones and putting them back on. Then the signals are very bright. The ones on now are also LED. I'll post some pics later today. |
