Anyone ever stripped the black powdercoat from the case and then polished it? I'm thinking about it and I'm wondering if anyone has had problem doing this, or has any suggestions for methods.

Yep,

Just use aircraft stipper. It will take about 3 coats to get all the black off. Then it takes a bunch of sanding to smooth the case enough to polish it. It polishes up nicely.
